The Corner Shop
Last week the children asked to play shops so I pulled out the cash register, loaded it up with receipt paper and off to the shop we went.
“What are you going to sell in your shop?” The children gathered fruit, veg, bread, eggs and dairy from home corner and set them up on their shop shelves.
“How much are you going to charge for that?” The children matched their products against the fruit and groceries posters then decided how much to charge for each item. Oranges & lemons 50c/kg, Cheese $9, eggs $1.10, Ice cream $3..... bargain!
“What are you going to put your money in?” The children collected baskets and put their coins and notes in purses and wallets.
They had a great time shopping and being the shop keeper, role playing the shopping process .... selecting food, lining up, entering numbers on the register, selecting coins and notes to pay for food, taking their receipts, giving change. “Thank you. Come again!”
There is a 3 step process to using the cash register which must be followed in the same sequence each time to get the draw open .... and to get the reward of “DING” as the draw opens and CLICK CLICK CLICK as the receipt issues lol. There is also a big yellow button which resets the register and shuts off that annoying, loud alarm when the sequence is not correct. “Someone hit the yellow button please!!!”
In addition to practicing sequencing actions, the children practiced sorting notes and coins within the cash draw and colour naming the coins. We also looked at $5, $10, $20 & $50 notes practicing recognition and naming.
Learning Outcomes
Children begin to understand how symbols work when they use symbols in play to represent and make meaning; when they begin to sort, categorise, order and compare attributes of objects and when they draw on memory of a sequence to complete a task
Children use technologies to investigate ideas and represent their thinking when they identifiy the uses of technologies in everyday life and use real or imaginary technologies as props in their play and when they engage with technology for fun and to make meaning
