Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Take another look through your What & When for Families guide to explore age-appropriate activities and learning ideas you can try together.

💛 Sometimes the best learning resource is the one you already have at home.

Our Kindergarten friends have been enjoying the wonderful experience of drawing in their very own books! ✏️📖 This activity encourages creativity, imagination and self-expression while helping children develop their fine motor skills, pencil control and hand-eye coordination. Having their own book also gives children a sense of ownership and pride in their creations, building confidence as they see their ideas come to life on each page. 🌈✨

With no set outcome, the children were free to experiment, create and discover in their own unique ways. Our toddler friends had so much fun exploring science during Science Week! 🌈🔬 Using colourful milk and droppers, they carefully added it to the oil and watched with excitement as the colours moved, swirled and changed. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that encouraged curiosity, concentration and a sense of wonder as our little scientists discovered what happens when different liquids come together! 🥛✨

Our pre kindy friends are exploring many hands on fine motor skills and today the children enjoyed a bead-threading experience that supported the development of their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. As they carefully threaded each bead, they strengthened their finger muscles, refined their grasp, and practised coordinating their hand movements with what they could see. Experiences like this help build the foundation for everyday tasks such as drawing, writing, dressing, and using tools, while also encouraging patience, focus, and persistence.

As part of Dental Health Week, our toddler friends strengthened their fine motor skills by practising their scissor cutting while creating their own dental-themed artwork. The children carefully explored how to hold and use scissors safely, building hand strength, coordination, and confidence with each snip. They were proud to express their creativity as they designed unique pieces of art, making learning about healthy teeth both fun and engaging.

Today, the children embraced their creativity through body painting, transforming the experience into their own imaginative play. As they explored colours, textures, and ideas together, they invited Miss Peta to join in the fun. This shared experience encouraged collaboration, communication, and confidence as the children led the play, expressed themselves freely, and strengthened their social connections through joyful, child-led learning.
