It was an icy start feeding out hay and checking water troughs this morning, but what a magnificent Winter’s day it turned into. Perfect for riding or just hanging out with our beloved horses.

Whilst this horse is pictured alone, she lives in a herd with three others. Horses are social by nature, and where possible should be allowed to exercise these natural behaviours. With more people experiencing self isolation around the world, it’s a good time to reflect on how we impose living arrangements on our horses. All of our horses at Wandarrah Estate live in herds, and always will. We can only hope less horses live in isolation (where possible), in the future.

An excellent post explaining targeted worming. A practice that we use, in addition to low stocking rates, paddock rotation and regular manure management. It’s important for all horse owners to understand the benefits, for the sake of their horses health.

💩 TARGETED WORMING 💩

Is your wormer actually working, or even necessary at all? There is a huge amount of resistance to most wormers and there is NO EVIDENCE that rotating wormers slows resistance either! 80% of worms are carried by 20% of horses and by doing faecal egg counts (FEC) every 4 months, these horses can be identified and only these treated. This means some horses are not treated and their worms are not exposed to the wormer and cannot develop resistance. This susceptible worms breed with resistant worms to dilute the surviving population of worms.
