Today, our Kinder 4 children participated in Part 1 of our Body Safety Workshop with Zoe from Body Safety Australia.

Through discussions, activities, and the story It's My Body, the children explored feelings and emotions, learned how their bodies can react when they feel scared or worried, and developed an understanding of personal boundaries and body ownership. They also practiced recognising body language and using confident words to communicate when they do or do not want to be touched.

Learning about body safety from an early age is an important part of helping children build confidence, understand their rights, recognise their feelings, and respect the boundaries of others. These are valuable life skills that support children's wellbeing, safety, and positive relationships.

Carolyn from the Little Sprouts Program introduced the children to earthworms. She talked about their characteristics and features, including how to identify their head and tail. The children learned that earthworms lay eggs, breathe through their skin, and often come to the surface when it rains because they cannot swim. Carolyn also explained that earthworms are not insects because they do not have an exoskeleton. Instead, they belong to a group of animals called annelids.

She showed the children some small earthworms, and several children noticed that the worms were trying to hide. The children guessed that the classroom might have been too bright for them. This led to a discussion about how worms prefer dark environments, so we left only half of the classroom lights on.

Afterwards, we moved to the tables for a hands-on observation activity. Each child was given an earthworm to observe. They looked closely at the worm's body, including its muscles and clitellum, and those who felt comfortable were given the opportunity to gently hold an earthworm.

The children were then given the chance to place the earthworms into their new home, our worm farm. We also discussed how the children will help care for the worm farm by feeding the worms appropriate foods and ensuring their environment remains healthy. The children were excited about becoming worm farm helpers and taking responsibility for looking after the worms.

Who is the heaviest animal? ⚖️ 🐘🦭🐨🐄🦕

Our toddlers had so much fun exploring weight and balance using animal figures and scales!

By comparing different-sized animals, children made predictions, tested their ideas and discovered which animals were heavier, lighter and balanced. Along the way, they built early maths skills and learned new vocabulary such as heaviest, lightest and balanced.

There were plenty of smiles, surprises and exciting discoveries as the children explored and learned through play. 🥰✨

🪱 Our Worm Farm is Thriving! 🪱

The children have been busy caring for our worm farm and learning all about sustainability, recycling, and how worms help our environment.

By feeding the worms our fruit and vegetable scraps, we're teaching children firsthand how food waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost. The children love checking on the worms, observing how they move, and learning about their important role in keeping our planet healthy.

Following our celebrations of National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, the Kinder 4 children continued exploring Aboriginal perspectives through the Dreaming story of Tiddalik the Frog. Tiddalik drank all the water from the rivers and billabongs, and the animals had to work together to make him laugh and return the water.
Children enthusiastically dressed up as characters from the story and transformed our classroom into an Australian outback. Through role play and imaginative storytelling, they retold the story while exploring important messages about caring for the environment, sharing, and teamwork.
This engaging experience fostered creativity, confidence, collaboration and a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and storytelling traditions.
