When human beings are comfortable on every level – socially, emotionally, mentally and physically – they are in the best possible state to intake, process and retain information. If they are bored, stressed, embarrassed or physically uncomfortable, people can’t and don’t learn. They experience the corporate version of the classic “fight or flight” syndrome: they disagree or disengage.

For human beings to remember new information, they need to connect it to existing memories. Unless we tie our information to something relevant to our audience, they will find it hard to remember.

Explaining context is often a vital part of this process. Sometimes, we have to start by establishing why our audience needs to know this information or how it relates to something they care about.

‘Engagement’ is what makes your presentation work. Anytime you focus on your audience, rather than just your content, you will instantly increase your audience’s level of engagement – mentally,
physically, and emotionally. As engagement levels rise, so does the chance of your
presentation being effective.
