Beer Aquatic this Thursday everyone! The Indian Ocean may be the smallest ocean, but it’s a powerhouse. It’s where ocean currents, cultures, and climates collide — and it shapes life in Australia far more than most of us realise.

One-third of the world’s population lives around its rim, relying on its fisheries and rain-fed agriculture. The warmest waters on Earth sit just north of Australia in the Indonesian Seas, building the giant cloud systems that drive our northern wet and dry seasons. And while most Aussies know about Pacific ENSO, the Indian Ocean's influence on our climate remains a bit of a mystery…

Join Prof Helen Phillips (Thurs Nov. 27 at 6:30 at the Hobart Brewing Company) as she takes us on a whirlwind tour of the Indian Ocean — explaining ocean circulation, weather patterns, and real-world impacts

Huge thanks to Dr Max Rintoul for a great Beer Aquatic talk last night.

We had a full house, and were all captivated by the complexities of geoengineering technologies, which could be crucial to mitigating climate change but might also have some catastrophic consequences for people, ecosystems, and the global climate.

See you next month: October 30th!

Last night at Beer Aquatic Dr Scott Spillias grappled with the efficacy and ethics of AI in science, and gave a masterclass in how to wrangle scarily human-like bots to produce anything from country music to tuna haikus and fish facts 🐟

See you on September 25th for another great talk!

Thanks for breaking down the science and strategy behind the Big Fish card game last night at Beer Aquatic

This innovative tool makes marine science accessible for all ages, while promoting the importance of sustainable recreational fishing. Big fish play a key ecological role—it’s not just about the undersized catch 🐠

Science communication isn’t always smooth sailing—especially when it comes to reaching diverse audiences and inspiring real change.

In marine science, recreational fishers play a crucial role but are often overlooked. With research revealing that big fish are key to sustainable recreational fishing, a new and creative way to tell the story is needed.

So how do you get the message across that big fish matter? The Big Fish Card Game 🐠 🐟

Join marine scientist, and UW photographer at Beer Aquatic as he shares how playful communication can lead to powerful conversations.

Such a fun & engaging Sci-Comm talk last night! 🐧 🐦

Thank you Dr (& her amazing crew) for sharing your fieldwork experiences on Wedge Island and helping us understand the foraging ecology of short-tailed shearwaters — and how it compares to little penguins. It opened up a whole new appreciation for their unique survival strategies.

See you again next month, 26th June— 630pm at for another inspiring! 🍻 🌊

Thanks to Dr Will Hobbs for a great talk last Thursday about Antarctic sea ice and its effects on global climate, equal parts compelling and funny!

But we’d expect nothing less from our OG MC. It was great to finally see him answering the audience’s tough questions and dropping the mic! Thanks to Will for many years putting on an incredible show.

We’re back May 29th with another great speaker. See you then! 🪶
