Bathurst High Campus Celebrates a Successful Aboriginal Education School Development Day

Bathurst High Campus recently held an inspiring School Development Day dedicated to Aboriginal Education, where all teaching and support staff came together to deepen their understanding and commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. The day began with a special morning tea in the gym, thoughtfully catered by Gerald Power from Bush Tucka. Gerald, a respected Wiradjuri community leader and Orange’s first Indigenous council member and former Deputy Mayor, shared his rich cultural heritage. Through his business, Indigenous Cultural Adventures, Gerald offers workshops and cultural immersion experiences with the blessing of local Wiradjuri Elders. Staff enjoyed unique bush tucker food with a modern twist, gaining both cultural insight and culinary delight. Following teacher-directed time, Gerald led a cooking workshop where staff learned about the culture and heritage of the First Nations People through the preparation of a traditional dish that Aboriginal people have consumed for over 50,000 years. This hands-on experience further enriched everyone’s appreciation of Indigenous history and culture. In the afternoon, Tony Wilson, Strategic Delivery Adviser from the Aboriginal Education and Communities Directorate, guided staff through workshops focused on the Guiding Principles of Aboriginal Education and advancing cultural responsiveness across the school community. His expertise and engaging approach ensured a meaningful continuation of the day’s learning and reflection. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Gerald Power and Tony Wilson for their professionalism, knowledge, and inspirational presentations that made the day so valuable for all staff. A special acknowledgement also goes to Keith Macleay (Aboriginal Education Coordinator), Katrina Lane (ACLO Bathurst Network), and Kenni Kennedy (Aboriginal SLSO) for their dedication and careful planning, which were crucial to the day’s success and our ongoing efforts to support Aboriginal students. As a result of the day’s learning, faculties are now designing faculty-based projects to be implemented in Semester 2. These projects will be presented at the next full school staff meeting, demonstrating our collective commitment to embedding Aboriginal perspectives throughout Bathurst High’s curriculum and culture.

Bathurst High Open Boys Volleyball Team Make a Proud Return to NSW CHS Championships
Bathurst High’s Open Boys Volleyball Team recently took to the courts at the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Championships in Sydney, marking a significant milestone for the school. This was the first time in many years that Bathurst High students competed at the state level since the legendary combined Denison College Girls Team from Kelso High, under the guidance of the esteemed coach Jerry Sheader, won the entire competition. Under the enthusiastic leadership of new head coach Brent Dickson and assistant coach Connor Milliss, the team achieved success by qualifying through the Western Region competition, a testament to their hard work and dedication. The squad, consisting of Darius Debenham, Flynn Wolfe, Yuji Curry, Jude Spencer Smith, Alexis Seal, Robert Cianfrano, Rei Collins, Christian Jacob Santos, Ioannis Karagiorgos, Amosa Martin, and David Martin, faced a highly competitive field at the championships. Drawn into one of the toughest pools alongside the reigning champions and three other top NSW teams, Bathurst High’s boys fought valiantly. Though they lost four games on the first day, they displayed determination and skill, challenging their opponents and enjoying several great moments on court. On the second day, the team bounced back to secure a victory against Armidale, finishing 17th overall at the state event. Beyond the results, the experience proved invaluable for our players who gained insights and skills that will serve them well in future competitions. We congratulate the boys for their outstanding effort, sportsmanship, and conduct both on and off the court. Their performance has made Bathurst High proud and revitalised our presence in state-level volleyball. Special thanks go to coaches Brent Dickson and Connor Milliss for their unwavering commitment to developing and supporting the team. Welcoming Ms Keira Ivory to Bathurst High Campus

We are thrilled to announce that Ms Keira Ivory, a talented beginning teacher and Rural Scholarship holder, has been appointed to our very own Bathurst High Campus, commencing her teaching career with us in 2027. This fantastic news has been met with great excitement throughout our school community. Keira has truly impressed everyone she has worked with during her practicums and her temporary teaching contract within the English faculty throughout 2026. Her dedication, skills, and passion for teaching have made a strong and positive impact, and we are fortunate to have secured such an impressive graduate on our team. Currently, Keira is completing her final primary practicum at Perthville Public School. She will return to Bathurst High for the remainder of this year before officially starting full-time teaching in Term 1, 2027. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Keira for choosing Bathurst High Campus and look forward to the positive influence she will undoubtedly have on our students, families, and the wider school community in the years to come. Introducing Campbell Barwick: Running the 2026 Melbourne Marathon for a Cause Close to His Heart

We are excited to introduce Campbell Barwick, son of Ken Barwick OAM, Principal of Bathurst High Campus, who has taken up running with a meaningful mission. Campbell is training to compete in the 2026 Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival, with a goal that goes far beyond the finish line. Campbell is running to raise funds for the Dylan Alcott Foundation, an organisation that has made a significant impact on his life. Living with low vision, Campbell has benefited greatly from the foundation’s support, including receiving the prestigious Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship while studying for a Bachelor of Biotechnology at the University of Newcastle. In his own words, Campbell shares: “Hello, my name is Campbell Barwick, and I am running in the 2026 Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival to raise money for the Dylan Alcott Foundation. I have low vision and this charity is very important to me as they are the reason I am studying a Bachelor of Biotechnology at the University of Newcastle. Over the past few years, I have received the Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship at Newcastle University, and I would love to pay the foundation back and help others.” Campbell hopes to inspire donations of any size to help him reach his fundraising target. “It would be awesome if you could donate no matter how big or small, every dollar counts. Or even just sharing this page would help spread awareness, helping me reach my goal and give back to an organisation that is responsible for providing so many opportunities to people living with a disability. Thank you, and I really appreciate the support.”

Excitement Breeds on the Bathurst High Campus Agriculture Farm

This is truly the most exciting time of the year on the Bathurst High Campus Agriculture Farm! With the arrival of numerous lambs and adorable baby alpacas, the farm has become the heart of learning and joy for our students. Teachers Sally Williams and Margaret Setright have cultivated a vibrant and engaging environment, where students are literally begging to visit the farm every day. The enthusiasm is infectious as the Primary Industry students take on important hands-on roles, vaccinating and caring for our new arrivals, ensuring they are healthy and thriving. Our beloved Farm Assistant, Justin JJ Edmunds, has formed a special bond with the animals. It’s a common sight to see lambs and alpacas running up to him, eager for a cuddle and happy to bask in his gentle care. The incredible dedication and teamwork displayed on the farm are truly inspiring. We commend everyone involved in this heartwarming chapter of the Bathurst High Campus Agriculture Farm. Keep up the fantastic work—your passion and hard work are shaping a bright future both for the animals and our students. Here’s to a wonderful season filled with learning, laughter, and love on the farm!

Year 10 Future Directions Student Subject Selection interviews

Year 10 students have had an opportunity over the past two days to finalise their subject choices for senior school. Our Future Directions process brought students, parents and teachers together to discuss student interests, abilities and aspirations which are all essential elements of developing a well-balanced and purposeful pattern of study.

A big thank you to all students, parents, and staff who participated. If you were unexpectedly unable to attend or had contacted us early to reschedule, we will be in touch over the next few days to arrange a follow-up.

New English Staffroom Thanks to the Department of Education and Assets

We are delighted to express our heartfelt thanks to the NSW Department of Education and Assets for providing Bathurst High Campus with a wonderful new and spacious English Staffroom. For many years, our English teachers worked in isolated and cramped compartments, which made sharing resources and collaborating on programs and assessments a real challenge. Thanks to the Department’s support, our English and Languages teachers now enjoy a modern, open environment that promotes communication and teamwork. The outdated rooms were demolished at the end of last term, paving the way for the construction of this fantastic new space, which officially opened at the start of Term 3. This new staffroom is already fostering greater collaboration and discussion about classes and curriculum, enhancing the teaching and learning experience for both staff and students. We look forward to seeing big smiles on the faces of our teachers—and consequently, on the faces of our students. Once again, a sincere thank you to the Department of Education and Assets for making this important improvement possible. Your commitment to supporting our school community is truly appreciated.

Celebrating Jacqui Hood: Bathurst High Campus Lead Teacher Chosen for Prestigious AITSL Review

Bathurst High is excited to share the exciting news that Jacqui Hood, our exceptional Lead Teacher at Bathurst High Campus, has been selected to represent the NSW Department of Education in the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) review of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. About a month ago, Jacqui was invited to participate in this important national review process—a clear acknowledgement of her outstanding expertise, dedication, and leadership in education. We recently received confirmation that Jacqui’s involvement is secured, marking a significant milestone in her already distinguished career. Jacqui’s leadership at LEAD level is well known within our campus and beyond, where she actively supports and mentors teachers, fostering professional growth and excellence. Her selection for the AITSL review is not only a tremendous honour but also a testament to her long-term commitment to teaching, learning, and the education community at large. The AITSL review of teaching standards plays a critical role in shaping the professional expectations and development pathways for teachers across Australia. By contributing to this process, Jacqui is helping to ensure that the Standards remain relevant, rigorous, and reflective of contemporary teaching practice—ultimately benefiting educators and students nationwide. We could not be prouder of Jacqui Hood. Her dedication, leadership, and passion make her a true inspiration to many teachers. Celebrating Arabella Gilbert’s Remarkable Audition for the NSW Talent Development Project

Staff and students are incredibly proud to congratulate Arabella Gilbert for her outstanding achievement in being selected to audition for the highly competitive NSW Talent Development Project (TDP). This year’s audition process attracted an exceptionally talented field, making Arabella’s selection for the audition workshop a testament to her remarkable musical ability and dedication. Arabella’s beautiful vocal quality, paired with her natural musicality as she accompanied herself on guitar, truly impressed the creative team. Her performances revealed not only technical skill but a genuine artistic sensitivity that sets her apart. The panel of experts noted Arabella’s lovely vocal tone and encouraged her to explore developing a more personal interpretation of her repertoire to build even greater emotional expression. Furthermore, Arabella showed potential for growth through songwriting, a suggestion aimed at helping her to cultivate a unique artistic identity and deepen her creative expression. This insight speaks to her versatility and creativity as a young musician, highlighting a bright future ahead. Although this year’s auditions were fiercely competitive and Arabella was not offered a place in the 2027 program, this in no way diminishes her immense talent or potential. Many successful participants have auditioned multiple times before securing a place, and we look forward to seeing Arabella continue to grow, develop, and shine in future opportunities. We encourage Arabella to keep nurturing her passion for music, building her confidence, and pursuing her artistic journey with enthusiasm and resilience. Her dedication and ability are truly commendable, and we are excited to watch her musical journey unfold. From Bathurst to New Jersey: Celebrating the Journey of 2002 DUX Verkha Kirpalani
On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, Bathurst High School had the pleasure of welcoming back one of its most distinguished alumni, Verkha Kirpalani, the 2002 DUX. Joined by her father, husband, and two children, Verkha revisited the school where her journey of academic and personal excellence began. The warm hospitality extended by Mr. Craig Luccarda, who personally guided Verkha and her family on a tour of the campus, made the visit a truly memorable trip down memory lane. Verkha now resides in New Jersey, USA, where she holds an esteemed position as Executive Senior Vice President at Bank of America. As the Testing Executive for the Global Financial Crimes business, Verkha has built a highly successful career marked by leadership and expertise. Her professional journey began with an Applied Finance degree from Macquarie University, during which she earned a coveted Summer Internship at KPMG. Her exceptional work there quickly led to a permanent position in their Sydney office. Demonstrating outstanding dedication, integrity, and communication skills, Verkha earned the trust of KPMG's senior leadership, which facilitated a rare global transfer to New York amidst the challenging period of the Global Financial Crisis. This move also coincided with her marriage to Dileep Perchani, an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley Bank in New York. Verkha's early beginnings were humble, starting as a checkout operator at Big W in Bathurst before advancing to manage customer service operations. Her strong interpersonal skills and professionalism always shone through, both in her work and her community involvement. Community spirit has been a defining feature of Verkha’s life. Alongside her sister Vijyata, she passionately engaged in numerous charitable activities, including Indian cultural dance performances to raise funds for local causes such as the Quota Club of Bathurst and the Fred Hollows Foundation. Their service extended to supporting drought relief efforts, medical services, cancer care, and community celebrations, embodying the values of compassion and leadership instiled at Bathurst High.
In recognition of her outstanding community contributions and character, Verkha was awarded the Bathurst Rotary Youth of the Month Award in September 2002, an honour that continues to reflect her lifelong commitment to service and excellence. Verkha’s visit was not only a reunion but also an inspiration for current students, reminding them that with dedication and heart, their own journeys can lead to global achievement while staying grounded in community values. Her children, delighted with the lollipops received during the tour, are already eager for the next Bathurst visit, a testament to the lasting impact of their mother’s roots. Bathurst High School proudly celebrates Verkha Kirpalani’s remarkable achievements and looks forward to welcoming more alumni whose journeys inspire generations to come.
