Some very interesting reading and guidance here. I especially like the reminder about thinking about what came before the behaviour, what is the behaviour that’s occurring, and what happens afterwards.

When you want to reduce problem behaviors like tantrums, whining and hitting, it can help to use strategies from Functional Behavior Analysis. FBA is based on understanding the function of the problem behavior in order to change it.

I am very excited to be commencing my practice as a Specialist Education Consultant Teacher in the Wodonga/ Baranduda area, supporting students who are experiencing difficulties in learning.

Over the past 12 years I have worked with students, families and schools in the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula area, but have now relocated to Baranduda.

Specialising in the diagnosis of Learning Difficulties, I work with individual students in their homes, in my office or within a school setting where appropriate.

Following assessment, I develop an explicit learning program targeting specific points of learning, designed to address individual difficulties. I then work weekly and regularly with students following current best practice in the science of learning and literacy.

A major aspect of my work is focused on developing a close relationship with the student, building self-esteem and self-belief in managing their learning.

I work with Primary students in Literacy and Maths, and Middle Years Secondary students in Literacy.

If you would like further information about me, my experience and qualifications, or to discuss your child's needs and the best ways to support them, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Wishing everyone a happy and positive beginning to a new school year.
For parents who have children with learning difficulties this can be a very stressful time, as they meet new teachers, or perhaps transition to new schools. So many variables, and for many, some memories of frustration and even anger from past experiences. Parents only want the best opportunities for their children, and often find the school system hard to navigate.
As teachers we need to show care and consideration for parents, and make time to listen to their concerns...not a quick half conversations on the run.
Students may have very mixed emotions...excitement about being back at school, meeting up with friends, discovering their new classroom and the most challenging...who is this person who is going to guide their lives for the next twelve months....?
For students with learning difficulties, new classmates, a different environment, new organisation and routine, even new learning materials....everything is a potential challenge and even a minefield. Do they need to develop strategies to' cover up' the fact that they don't know where to start, can't remember the instructions, don't know the other kids well enough to ask for help.....this is where the anxieties and memories of past failures all keep flooding back.
For parents who know their children will struggle...do they bounce into the classroom and try to let the teacher know about their children, do they sit back and just wait?
There are helpful places out there...websites such as Understood and Sue Larkey (autism) are written for parents. On Facebook check out Dyslexia Victoria and related sites.
When you are ready, make an appointment with your teacher and or learning community leader to share your concerns in a positive and proactive way...to make a learning plan for your child.
If the school is unwilling, you may need extra support from a learning specialist. You can access Learning Difficulties Australia for lists of consultants who can help you, and here in the Geelong area we have a group of Special Education Consultants affiliated with LDA.
There is always help out there, never feel you are the only parent battling for the best learning for your child, whether they are at primary or secondary school, or you are homeschooling.
