📚The magic of a good book 📚

In light of Book Week, and it has me thinking about those special childhood books that somehow stay with us long after we’ve grown up.

For me, The Magic Faraway Tree was one of them. I still remember being completely transported into that magical world every single time I read it. It never lost its magic.

Then there was The BFG, Roald Dahl, Judy Blume... love, love, LOVE!

And now, one of my favourite things is seeing that love of reading continue with my boys. 💙

Aside from the joy of getting lost in a great story, reading can also be a beautiful part of your child’s bedtime routine.

I often encourage families to include a book before bed. That familiar routine of slowing down, cuddling up and reading together can become a lovely sleep cue, helping your child recognise that the busy part of the day is over and it’s time to wind down for sleep. 😴

And some of the best conversations and cuddles happen over a bedtime story too.

So, in celebration of CBCA Book Week, I’d love to know...

📖 What was YOUR favourite book growing up? And what book can your child not get enough of right now?

Share them below. I’d love some recommendations!

💡SLEEP TIP💡BEDTIME ROUTINES

A bedtime routine each night is more than just a habit—it's the perfect wind down for your children, and they absolutely LOVE spending this precious time with you at the end of each big day.

These moments of calm are not just about getting ready for bed; they're about building lasting bonds and creating a sense of security. Whether it's reading a favorite story, sharing cuddles, or talking about the day, this time together is invaluable.

Beyond the emotional connection, there's science at work too. The calmness of the routine, paired with dimmer lighting, helps stimulate melatonin production, the sleep hormone that makes it easier for them to drift off peacefully.

By embracing a consistent bedtime routine, you're not only helping your children sleep better—you're also nurturing their overall well-being and strengthening your relationship. It's a win-win for everyone!

This time next week, I will be at the Women in Leadership Summit Melbourne, preparing to deliver my first leadership workshop.

Am I nervous? Absolutely.
But more than anything, I’m excited to bring a conversation to the leadership table that I believe we need to be having much more often, which is of course SLEEP.

We invest so much in developing better leaders.

We talk about strategy, resilience, emotional intelligence, decision-making, productivity and performance.

But what if one of our most powerful leadership tools is something we often sacrifice in order to achieve all of those things? Quality sleep.

Because when we consistently compromise our sleep, we’re not just showing up tired.

It can affect how clearly we think, how we make decisions, how we regulate our emotions and ultimately, how we lead.

Across the two-day Summit, I’ll have an AH Sleep Specialists table and will be delivering two workshops:

Day 1: Sleep. My Leadership Advantage.

Day 2: What’s Stealing my Sleep?

And when I look at the calibre of people contributing to this Summit, the nerves definitely go up another level!

The program includes incredible voices such as Celeste Barber and Hannah Ferguson, alongside leaders including Dr Lisa J. Griffiths and Marcela Lapertosa.

To have the opportunity to bring the conversation about sleep and leadership to the same Summit as these incredible women and leaders is a huge privilege, and one I certainly don’t take for granted.

My hope is to encourage more leaders to stop viewing sleep as something we prioritise after the work is done, and start recognising it as an important part of how we perform, lead and live well in the first place.

One week to go. The nerves are definitely there, but so is the excitement!

IT’S BOOK WEEK!

Depending on who you ask, Book Week can bring lots of excitement... or a little bit of costume dread for both the children and parents!

But beyond the costumes and parades, we love what Book Week celebrates.

Books give our children the chance to use their imagination, discover new worlds and, perhaps most importantly, give us an opportunity to slow down and connect with them.

There’s something really special about cuddling up together at the end of the day with a favourite story. Those simple moments of connection can also become a beautiful part of a calming bedtime routine.

So whether you’re putting the finishing touches on a costume or reading that favourite book for what feels like the 100th time, I hope there are some lovely moments amongst the Book Week craziness.

Tell us, does Book Week bring excitement or dread in your house?

"Children spell love as: TIME."

Dr Anthony P Witham

This quote is such a beautiful reminder that, to our children, it’s often the simplest moments that mean the most.

The cuddle before bed.
Reading their favourite story... again.
Listening to the little details of their day.
Lying beside them for an extra few minutes.
Simply being there, fully present.

It’s easy to get caught up in everything we need to do for our children, but sometimes what they need most from us is simply our time.

So today, perhaps we can all slow down for just a moment and give them a little more of it. 💛

Because these ordinary little moments?
They’re often the ones that become the most special memories.

Recently, it’s become increasingly common for parents to be advised that melatonin supplements are the solution for children who struggle with sleep.

It is important to understand that it is extremely rare, in both children and adults, to have a true deficiency in melatonin production.

Our bodies are beautifully designed to create what we need. The real challenge is often not a lack of melatonin, but the environment and habits that disrupt its natural flow.

Light exposure, screen time, overstimulation, inconsistent routines, these are the everyday factors that interfere with the body’s natural rhythm. Supporting the conditions for melatonin to be released at the right time is almost always a better, safer, and more effective approach than relying on supplements.

While melatonin might seem like a quick fix, the long-term impacts of supplementation are still uncertain.

What we do know is that nurturing the body’s natural processes sets children (and adults) up for healthier, more sustainable sleep over a lifetime.

📸 HAPPY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY! 📸

In celebration of World Photography Day today, I thought I’d share one of my favourite photos.

This was taken from our veranda, and it’s a view I don’t think I’ll ever tire of. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to stop, take it in and enjoy this beautiful outlook from our home.

Sometimes it’s the simple moments and familiar views that bring us the most joy.

Now I’d love to see yours!

Did you know research has found that 33% to 45% of Australian adults experience inadequate sleep, whether through sleep duration, quality or the impact it has on their day? (1)

When families come to us for sleep support, we know they’ve often already tried A LOT of different approaches.

They’ve read the books, searched online, asked friends and family and tried all the tips... yet sleep still isn’t working.

That’s because every child and every family is different.

Our role isn’t to tell you how to parent or give you a one-size-fits-all sleep plan.

It’s to listen to what’s happening, understand your child and your family, and combine that with our sleep expertise to find the safest approach that works for you.

Because you know your child best.
And sometimes, you just need the right support and knowledge to help you find a way forward. 💙

If sleep is feeling challenging in your home, we’re here to help.

Better nights can create brighter days..

Sleep affects so much more than how tired we feel.

When we sleep better, we often have more energy, more patience, clearer thinking and more capacity to enjoy the little moments in our day. 💙

And this isn't just true for our children.
Sleep matters for the whole family.

Sometimes improving sleep isn’t about achieving the ‘perfect’ night. It’s about understanding what’s happening, making small changes and finding an approach that works for you and your family.

Because when nights start to feel easier, days can feel a whole lot brighter too. ☀️

If sleep is feeling difficult in your home, you don’t have to figure it out alone. We’re here to help.
