When a child learns to read, just imagine what they can do. Reading opens up their world like no other skill. Unlike learning to speak, learning to read is not a naturally acquired skill - it has to be taught. But once learned, it's theirs forever and will enrich the life of any child into adulthood.

Read to me riddles and read to me rhymes.
Read to me stories of magical times.
Read to me tales about castles and kings.
Read to me stories of fabulous things.
Read to me pirates and read to me knights.
Read to me dragons and dragon book fights.
Read to me spaceships and cowboys and then
When you are finished, please read them again!

The first few lessons of the I Can Read programme focuses on revising phonemic awareness and phonics, with students then working through a series of six workbooks. The programme
has a structured reading approach, which introduces the beginning reader to a new sound each lesson, how to visually read and pronounce the sound when it is present in print and how to spell words containing the target sound. Pronunciation and comprehension significantly improve. Children progress to the advanced section of I Can Read from Volume 6 onwards, when reading skills are reinforced and embedded and the student moves towards advanced spelling, grammar, punctuation and expression.

A beautifully written and expertly crafted story will take you on a magical journey from the turn of the first page. You can almost feel the creaking of the boards underfoot and the sway of the bridge as you take your first tentative steps to an unknown destination. This immersive and personal pleasure is what makes reading a book so very special.

Encouraging your child to keep a record of their reading is a really good way to help them gain more from reading time. Try having them keep a small journal and enter the name of the book and the author as they finish each one. Ask him or her to write a few sentences about the book, maybe stimulated by a few questions such as:
• What did you enjoy most about the book / story?
• Who was your favourite character, and why?
• What did you learn that you didn’t know before?
• Would you like to read more books by this author?
This way, your child will be able to articulate the kind of books he or she likes to read. You can use this record to find similar books you know they will like or challenge your child to seek out something new and very different.

I CAN READ is proven effective because of its hierarchical approach to learned skills. The reading program was developed following ten years of research with children affected by dyslexia, ADD and developmental delay, by educational psychologists. Piloted in Australia in 1999 with over 400 children and then in Singapore in 2000 by the Ministry of Education, it has proven effective with children suffering from learning difficulties including reading difficulties, dyspraxia and dyslexia. It is the ideal system for pre-school and primary children who need to learn to read and for children who, for various reasons, have fallen behind their chronological age in their reading age. It is also ideal for students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
I CAN READ is not simply a reading program for early literacy or students with reading difficulties. It is a total literacy learning system, which is open to all ages and all abilities, to all children and adults wishing to acquire and improve English literacy skills.
Our system is unique and proprietary, taught by qualified teachers, and has a 100% success rate over more than 300,000 students. Find out more and book your free diagnostic assessment https://icanreadsystem.com

Research into the way children learn to write clearly indicates that when they are simply assigned writing tasks and have them marked and corrected teaches students nothing about the processes involved in writing. In fact, when taught in this way, students continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. Consequently, these students refrain from taking risks in creativity for fear of losing marks for incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar. The ICR Creative Writing Course teaches children to maintain ownership of, and responsibility for their writing pieces from start to finish. At every step of the writing process, students receive immediate feedback. Time is allotted for individual conferences in which the student learns to self-edit. In this way children learn to evaluate the quality of their writing and ultimately become independent and creative writers.
