This week is National Stroke Week under the Stroke Foundation.

Strokes can affect anyone at any age for any reason. Recognition is the key message, as minutes matter. "When a stroke strikes, it attacks up to 1.9 million brain cells per minute, so there is absolutely no time to waste. You must act fast and call 000 (triple zero) for help."

You can help minimise the damage from a stroke by following the acronym F.A.S.T.

Look at their Face - Can they smile? Does their face look droopy on one side?

Check their Arms - Do they have good grip strength on both sides? Can they hold their arms out in front of themselves without one arm dropping?

Listen to their Speech - Is their speech slurred? Do their words make sense?

TIME is critical. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately, and get the patient into a position of comfort on the floor. Lean them towards their affected side. Cover them with a blanket and remove any bystanders. Keep them company and monitor their vital signs.

For training in managing stroke, book into one of our many public courses at www.firstaidtraininggroup.com

Urgent Public Service Announcement!

Tomorrow, July 27th at 2:00pm, a nationwide test of the new AusAlert system may appear on all phones, tablets (except iPads) and smartwatches.

This may impact you at work, at home or in classes. Once it activates, it will sound a siren and buzz for around 10 seconds, and you do not need to do anything with it.

The alert will come through even if your device is on silent or Do Not Disturb.

The AusAlert system will go live across Australia in October 2026, in preparation for the upcoming fire season. It will be used to alert people to critical alerts and urgent safety information for any emergency.

For those of our students in classes tomorrow, this will be a minor disruption and will not significantly impact your training.

Monday 27 July 2026… are you ready for it? ✅

AusAlert will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, the system needs to be tested across Australia.

The national test of AusAlert is on Monday 27 July 2026 at around 2pm AEST.

AusAlert has 2 types of alerts, depending on how severe the emergency is. The national test is a Critical Alert.

Critical Alerts override 'silent' and 'do not disturb' device settings, and they can’t be opted out of. When you receive a Critical Alert, it will appear like a system notification on screens and make a loud siren sound for about 10 seconds.

This is the highest level of warning. It means you may be in danger. You should act immediately.

AusAlerts contain important information to keep you safe and informed during disasters.

The only way to stop your devices from receiving Critical Alerts is to switch them off or put them in aeroplane mode. If you don’t wish to receive the AusAlert national test, do this before the test time in your location and leave them off or in aeroplane mode for at least one hour.
