I'm very happy to finally be able to share this with you all! It's been nearly three years in the making... I am very excited to be finally holding this long-awaited exhibition at Burrinja.

I am delighted to announce Yarra / Birrarung a joint show between Aunty Janet Turpie-Johnstone and myself at Burrinja Gallery in Upwey, from the 24th June-23rd July. Opening night is 6.30 on Thursday 23rd June and you are welcome to come along.

An exhibition of parallel perspectives of this land.

'Aunty Janet Turpie-Johnstone, a salt-water woman from Portland and Katie Roberts a non-Indigenous artist, have both been making work about the Yarra/Birrarung for many years; Aunty Janet Turpie-Johnstone through her PhD research and Katie Roberts for over the last fifteen years of her artistic practice. This exhibition presents their two parallel artistic endeavours. These paintings and works on paper convey the layered historical and contemporary stories of on Wurundjeri land and Melbourne/Narrm. Both artists work to acknowledge and expose the impacts that colonisation imposed. This cross-cultural conversation is about place and is centred on the ongoing environmental trauma.'

As many of you will know, I have been making an ongoing body of work about the Yarra River or Birrarung since 2006, now it's time for the next chapter! This is an important new chapter in my work.

We are exhibiting along-side a collective of artists whose work also explores the Birrarung in a range of mediums. It's a great honour to be part of, especially as it opens during NAIDOC week.

There will be a Welcome to Country ceremony on the night of the opening and events and opportunities to connect with the artists and this conversation throughout the show.

It's going to be a wonderful show in a fabulous space. I'll share more about the artwork leading over the coming days and weeks.

No!!! Platypus killed by litter, in this case a hair tie 💔 on the Yarra at Warburton

We’ve previously highlighted the number of platypus deaths and injuries that are related to litter entanglement. Sadly, we have to report another such mortality incident – this time involving a platypus found dead near Warburton with an elasticated hair-tie around its neck – photo and report thanks to Johnathan McLay..
Hair-ties have been responsible for several platypus deaths in recent years, most notably of a juvenile female at Bright in May 2019 that had no less than three of these items around its neck which had caused horrendous injuries.
We ask everyone to pick up lost hair-ties when they see them anywhere so that they don’t get washed into nearby waterways. Also, when people are swimming in rivers or lakes they should avoid taking off hair-ties to shake their wet hair so that these items do not fall into the water to become death-traps.

Wurundjeri, Dja Dja Wurrung and Ngurai Illum-Wurrung woman Stacie Piper is our First Nations Curator - Yalingwa, and current Victorian NAIDOC Committee Chairperson. Yalingwa is a major First Peoples visual arts initiative, backed by a partnership between the Victorian Government, ACCA - Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and TarraWarra Museum of Art.

Happy 50th anniversary (1971-2021) to the greatest, cutest faunal emblem the state of Victoria could hope to have.

Leadbeater's Possum, Gymnobelideus leadbeateri, naked dart, fairy possum, 'bloody stupid possum'... this darling of the forest goes by many names.

Today, the elusive, iconic and critically endangered forest fairy looks to the foresight of Henry Bolte, former State Premier, and Rohan Delacombe, former State Governor, who proclaimed on this day, March the 2nd, in 1971 that Leadbeater's Possum,
Gymnobelideus leadbeateri McCoy, along with the Helmeted Honeyeater, Meliphaga cassidix (Gould), "be adopted as the Faunal Emblems for the State of Victoria".
