An incredible woman and musician. Hats off to her!
Clara Schumann was born today in 1819, and somehow built a 61-year performing career while raising eight children, supporting a seriously ill husband and earning the money that helped keep her family afloat.
By the time she married composer Robert Schumann, Clara was already famous. She had been performing publicly since childhood and was regarded as one of Europe’s extraordinary piano virtuosos. Marriage did not end that career. Motherhood did not end it either.
Clara gave birth to eight children. During the family’s years in Dresden alone, she had four babies while running the household, teaching piano, composing, rehearsing and continuing to perform. Robert’s worsening mental and physical health added another responsibility. Clara became caregiver, organizer and, increasingly, breadwinner.
When money was needed, she went on tour.
That meant leaving children behind, arranging their care, traveling between cities and walking onto concert stages where audiences saw the celebrated Clara Schumann. They did not see the domestic machinery required to get her there.
Then, in 1854, Robert suffered a catastrophic breakdown and entered an asylum. Clara was pregnant with their eighth child.
She kept performing.
After Robert died in 1856, she continued touring, teaching and championing his music while raising their surviving children. Her career ultimately stretched across roughly six decades.
Clara Schumann is remembered as the wife of a great composer.
But that description gets the story almost exactly backward.
She was one of the great musicians of the 19th century, carrying a family on the same hands that commanded Europe’s concert halls.
