Manufacturers have spent years convincing dentistry that stronger teeth whitening gel means faster, better results, and your patients are the ones feeling it, with more sensitivity, lower compliance and treatments that stop halfway. Great teeth whitening outcomes in a dental practice come from something far less exciting than gel strength, and it is the part of the treatment plan most practices were never shown.

This morning I brushed my teeth with 5% hydrogen peroxide toothpaste, bought it from a supermarket shelf, no dentist, no assessment, no questions asked, and within two minutes my gums were tingling. Stinging.

One percent higher and the law says you need a dental provider, which is exactly right, but the one percent below it you can scrub into your gum line at the kitchen sink and nobody bats an eye.

That’s not a clinical threshold, it’s a gap, and patients are living in it every day with no one to guide them.

The dental providers responsibility isn’t to wait for patients to ask about their tooth colour, it’s to chart it, open the conversation, and create the space for people to say what they’ve quietly been thinking about for years, and that’s the part the legislation was never going to build for you.

By the time I get a call, most dental practices have already tried to fix stalled or broken teeth whitening services, different stronger gels, a discount, an expensive ad campaign that spiked interest for a few weeks, but with limited success.

The belief that tends to follow is understandable, that teeth whitening is not really dentistry, results are inconsistent, so the wait for patients to ask goes on.
