💙 World Drowning Prevention Day – 25 July 💙
Today, we join communities around the world in recognising World Drowning Prevention Day and raising awareness that drowning can happen quickly, quietly and in many different environments.
Drowning prevention is a responsibility we all share. It begins with active supervision, safe choices around water and ensuring people of all ages have opportunities to develop strong swimming and water-safety skills.
At Y Learn and Swim, water safety is at the heart of every class we teach. Swimming is not only about learning strokes. It is also about understanding how your body moves through the water, remaining calm in unexpected situations, recognising danger and knowing your own abilities and limitations.
This coming week, Y Learn and Swim will be taking action through our No Equipment Week.
Throughout the week, our swimmers will be challenged to complete skills and swimming activities without relying on kickboards, noodles or other swimming equipment.
Instead, our classes will focus on:
💜 Body position, balance and buoyancy
🧡 Using body weight effectively in the water
💜 Independent floating and movement
🧡 Maintaining swimming skills without holding equipment
💜 Building confidence when support is removed
🧡 Understanding how the body naturally moves in and through the water
Equipment can be a valuable teaching tool, but it is important that swimmers do not become dependent on it. Removing equipment allows swimmers to better understand their own buoyancy, balance and ability to recover, float and move independently.
These skills can make an important difference if a swimmer unexpectedly enters the water without access to a kickboard, noodle or adult support.
Families can also help reduce the risk of drowning by:
💜 Maintaining active, undistracted supervision around water
🧡 Ensuring children cannot access pools or other bodies of water unsupervised
💜 Wearing correctly fitted lifejackets when boating or participating in water activities
🧡 Learning CPR and refreshing these skills regularly
💜 Checking weather, water conditions and local warnings
🧡 Continuing swimming and water-safety education throughout the year
No single swimming skill can make someone completely safe around water. Layers of protection, ongoing education, active supervision and responsible choices all play an important role.
Together, we can help create a safer and more water-aware community. 💜🧡
