This morning I had the pleasure of hosting an online coaster painting workshop for a group of nurses.

We worked through simple painting techniques and design ideas, with everyone putting their own spin on their set of coasters. No pressure to make anything perfect, just a relaxed creative session, a bit of conversation and something handmade to take away at the end.

We love bringing our workshops online for workplace teams and groups, especially when it gives people who spend so much of their time looking after others an opportunity to have a little time for themselves.

Something we love seeing in our sessions is families sitting down together, getting involved and sharing the experience, not just watching from the sidelines.

Parents, grandparents, carers and kids might approach the exact same activity completely differently. There’s conversation, helping each other out, comparing creations, swapping ideas and usually a bit of laughter along the way.

And while everyone goes home with something they’ve made, often the best part is simply having had that time to slow down, create and connect together.

That’s a big part of what our community arts sessions are about.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to have more than one mode of creativity.

For me, creativity has never lived in just one place. Sometimes it’s movement and choreography. Sometimes it’s writing, sound, visual ideas, designing a workshop or finding a completely different way to communicate an idea.

And I think each one feeds the others.

Stepping away from dance doesn’t necessarily mean stepping away from being creative. Sometimes working in another form is exactly what shifts an idea, sparks something unexpected or eventually brings me back to movement with a different perspective.

I spent a long time thinking I needed to fit neatly into one creative box. These days, I’m much more interested in what happens when I don’t.

More than one outlet. More than one way of thinking. More than one way of making.

We had the pleasure of working with a group of NDIS participants, this time exploring watercolour illustration from home.

Together we worked through simple techniques before creating our own whimsical characters, playing with colour, shape and personality, with plenty of room for everyone to interpret the ideas in their own way.

One of the things I love about our online sessions is that they make creative experiences accessible to participants wherever they are. Materials are sent out beforehand, then we come together online and create as a group.

A lovely session and some very cute characters brought to life!

We spent last Saturday morning online with one of our wonderful ongoing clients, this time getting creative with hand-painted nesting dolls.

Pictured is one of our partcipants work.

Working with a simple black-and-white palette, we explored different ways to personalise each doll using patterns, shapes, flowers, dots and plenty of individual touches.

We love continuing to develop new creative sessions for the organisations we work with regularly, keeping things fresh, accessible and, most importantly, enjoyable.

A lovely way to kick off the weekend!

I’ve been itching to move again.

After spending so much time developing Fractured Echoes, I’ve had a bit of a break from being in the studio, and I think I needed it.

Sometimes stepping away from a work is just as important as working on it. It gives ideas time to settle, makes space for other things, and lets you come back without being quite so buried in what you thought the work needed to be.

Now I’m at that slightly awkward stage of knowing I’m ready to return, but still trying to muster the energy to actually get myself back into the studio.

The ideas are starting to creep back in though. I’m thinking about movement again. Hearing sections differently. Wondering what needs to change.

So I think that’s probably my cue.

Time to get moving again and see where the next stage of Fractured Echoes takes me.

We’re heading to Kingston Arts during the spring school holidays for a colourful morning of painting, decorating and getting creative.

In Tweet Retreat: Paint Your Own Birdhouse, kids will transform their own wooden birdhouse using acrylic paints, patterns and playful designs. Think flowers, bugs, rainbows, birds or whatever their imagination comes up with. And, of course, they’ll take their finished creation home.

Designed for ages 7–13, it’s beginner-friendly, relaxed and all materials are included.

📅 Tuesday 22 September
⏰ 10am–11.30am
📍 Kingston Arts Centre, Moorabbin
⚡ Limited tickets remaining. Link in bio to book.

Our community programs give kids the chance to try something creative, learn new skills and, most importantly, make something that feels like their own.

Some jump straight in. Some take a little longer to find their idea. Some completely surprise themselves with what they create. That’s part of what we love about working with young people, there’s never just one way to participate or be creative.

From visual arts and craft to dance, movement, writing, music and more, Rebel Stepz Arts works with councils, libraries, community organisations and youth programs to create engaging arts experiences for young people.

And we always love seeing a room like this: busy, focused and creating.

Join me for a beginner-friendly Spoken Word Workshop, exploring creative writing, storytelling, voice, movement and sound.

I’m Sheena Chundee, a Melbourne-based choreographer and Director of Rebel Stepz Arts, and this workshop gives you a little insight into the creative process behind my solo performance work, Fractured Echoes.

The work explores identity and the different versions of ourselves we carry, who we inherit, who we become around other people, the influence of outside noise and expectations, and what happens when we try to find our own voice amongst it all.

Those ideas will become our starting point for writing.

Using some of the same themes, prompts and soundscapes that have informed Fractured Echoes, we’ll experiment with turning thoughts, memories and fragments of ideas into spoken word.

We’ll explore what happens when we change how words are spoken using volume, pace breath and silence.

We’ll play with music, sound and simple movement to see how they can completely shift the feeling of a piece.

This isn’t about being a poet or performer. No previous experience is needed, and there’s no pressure to perform or share your work.
It’s a chance to experiment with some of the ways I create, while finding your own way of telling a story.

📍 Collingwood Library
📅 Saturday 14 November
⏰ 10am–12pm

Early bird tickets available for a limited time.

Join me at this year’s Be Bold Festival with Creative Brimbank!

I will be at the Bowery Theatre leading Dance Lab Live, a beginner-friendly session offering a little insight into how I create and develop movement as a choreographer.

I’ll be joined by live musician Ania Reynolds , and together we’ll explore the relationship between movement and live sound.

As a group, we’ll turn those words into movement, play with rhythm and tempo, experiment with being loud, quiet, sharp and flowing, and gradually build those ideas into a short piece.

There’s no need to be a dancer!

Saturday 3 October
