IRONBARK RAILWAY TRESTLE. INGLISTON, VICTORIA. 1900

Ingliston is a small community of fewer than 100 people situated about 75 kms north west of Melbourne and 18 kms west of Bacchus Marsh.

This H. M. Hodgson photo from 1900 looks to the original timber railway trestle built over Ironbark Gorge and Ingliston Road, to the east of the township.

The trestle was built between 1887-1889 to carry the new direct Melbourne to Ballarat rail line over the gorge. The trestle as seen here survived until 1930 when it was replaced with a new steel girder bridge and embankment. Photos below.

There are still a few remnants of the old trestle bridge visible. Part of the post and rail fence for example.

The 1930 bridge, which is still in use today, is constructed of two massive parallel steel girders supporting the railway tracks between earth embankments. These are supported by trestles, the legs of which are set in reinforced concrete pedestal pad footings.

Late one afternoon capturing the afternoon parade near the bull farm (between Bacchus Marsh and Parwan), S305 and a string of cars turned up on a Down Bacchus Marsh passenger, deputising for a failed rail motor. On arrival at Bacchus Marsh, the S was turned, the train returning to Melbourne empty. The date: a sun blistering 3 February 1977.
