This week, students across Australind Senior High School took part in our latest Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) lesson, focusing on what it means to be Responsible by arriving at class on time and ready to learn.

Being punctual and prepared might seem like a small thing, but it makes a real difference. Having the right equipment and arriving on time helps students settle quickly, make the most of their learning time and get more from each lesson.

These are also habits that matter well beyond the classroom. Whether it is turning up for training, meeting friends or arriving at work, being on time and prepared shows responsibility and respect for others.

Families can help reinforce this message by having a conversation at home about the routines that make it easier to get to class on time and with everything needed for the day.

Current Year 11 students considering university after school may be interested in Murdoch University’s FlexiTrack High program.

FlexiTrack High is an alternative pathway to university that students complete during Year 12, while building the academic and independent learning skills needed for further study.

The program runs across Terms 1, 2 and 3 and includes dedicated class time at school as well as independent online study. Students can also gain WACE points through the program.

If FlexiTrack High is something you would like to consider for Year 12, the 2027 application form is available in your Compass News Feed messages. Applications close on Friday 11 September 2026.

🧡💙 WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE – WHO’S BRAVE ENOUGH? 💙🧡
Australind Senior High School is taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave on Wednesday 9 September, raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and supporting vital blood cancer research.

✂️ SHAVE, CUT OR COLOUR!

Students can get involved by having their hair shaved, cut or coloured during our Lunch 2 event.

👉 Students participating are expected to make a donation towards the World’s Greatest Shave.
👉 Shaving and haircuts will be carried out by a hairdresser.
👉 Colour will be applied using temporary coloured hair spray. It isn’t permanent but may stain very light-coloured hair.
👉 A completed permission form is required to participate. Forms are available from the Front Office and must be returned by Monday 7 September.

👀 AND THERE’S A SURPRISE…
One of our female staff members has volunteered to shave her head! Who is brave enough? You’ll have to come along at Lunch 2 to find out!

Ten of our Year 10 students recently visited Edith Cowan University to explore their interest in a future career in teaching.

The day gave students a chance to experience a little of university life, with a campus tour and interactive sessions similar to those undertaken by ECU teaching students. They also learnt more about the different teaching courses and specialisations available.

It was a valuable opportunity for our students to ask questions, explore what a career in education could look like and start thinking about the pathways that could take them there.

Recently, 13 of our Year 12 Outdoor Education students swapped the classroom for the trails and two nights under the stars for their Mountain Biking Expedition in Wellington National Park.

Based at Potters Gorge, students spent three days riding the Wambenger Mountain Bike Trails and putting their mountain biking, leadership and campcraft skills into practice as part of their Outdoor Education assessments.

It was a challenging few days, with early morning temperatures dropping to zero and below, alongside plenty of time on the bikes, setting up and managing camp, cooking meals and working together.

The expedition also gave the group a chance to enjoy this beautiful part of our region, with stops at Wellington Dam and Honeymoon Pool along the way.

Thank you to our staff for giving their time to accompany our students and make the overnight expedition possible.

Deciding when a child is ready for their first smartphone can be a challenging parenting decision. Readiness is not just about age. It also depends on a child’s maturity, self-regulation, judgement and ability to manage the responsibilities of being connected online.

The Smartphone Readiness Quiz is designed for parents and adult carers to complete with their child, encouraging important conversations while exploring the key skills that support safe and responsible smartphone use.

Rather than providing a simple yes or no answer, the results highlight areas of strength and where further development may be helpful. Families are also guided through suggested next steps, including a Family Smartphone Agreement and practical guidance on setting up parental controls before introducing a smartphone.

We encourage you to complete the quiz together and use the results as a starting point for ongoing conversations about safe, responsible and healthy smartphone use.

A cold and wet start gave way to a beautiful day for our Year 7 and 8 students at the South West School Sport Association Lightning Carnival on Wednesday.

Students represented Australind Senior High School across a range of sports, competing alongside schools from across the region. The carnival is a great opportunity for students to enjoy competition, develop their skills and work together as a team.

There were some strong results in the A Grade competitions, with our Boys Volleyball team going through the day undefeated before taking on Our Lady of Mercy College in the grand final and finishing as champions.

Our A Grade results were:
▪️Boys Volleyball – 1st, Champions
▪️Boys AFL – 3rd
▪️Netball Team 1 – 6th

Our remaining teams competed in participation grades, with plenty of opportunities to build confidence, develop skills and enjoy representing the school alongside their teammates.

Thank you to the staff, coaches and student helpers who supported our teams throughout the day. A special mention to our Year 12 student coaches who did a great job working with our younger students.

Well done to all of our Year 7 and 8 students for the way they represented Australind Senior High School throughout the carnival. We hope you enjoyed the day.

STEMXX Sisters is coming to Bunbury next weekend, giving girls in Years 5–9 the opportunity to explore STEM through hands-on workshops, interactive activities and connections with women working across STEM industries.

The free event will be held at Bunbury Catholic College on Saturday 29 August and is open to students from across the South West.

SchoolTV is offering a free webinar for parents and carers exploring practical ways to support young people experiencing anxiety and depression and help build resilience.

Presented by child psychologist Dr Emma Woodward and forensic psychiatrist Dr Joe Stammeijer, the 45-minute session will cover building the foundations of resilience, everyday habits that support wellbeing and strength-based approaches for neurodivergent children.

Yesterday was a big day for STEM at Australind Senior High School.

We were pleased to host nearly 300 Year 5 and 6 students for the 2026 STEM Showcase, bringing together young people from across the Leschenault Alliance of Public Schools for a day of hands-on learning.

Hosted by Australind Senior High School in partnership with the The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia - CMEWA, and sponsored by Albemarle Corporation through the Albemarle Foundation, the Showcase gave students the opportunity to explore robotics, coding, chemistry, engineering, autonomous technology and physics.

Across the day, our classrooms and learning spaces were filled with activity as primary students worked alongside our teachers, secondary students and industry representatives. Through each challenge, students were encouraged to be curious, solve problems, work together and discover how the things they learn at school connect with the world around them and future opportunities.

It was particularly special to see our own students step into the role of STEM ambassadors. They spent the day supporting and mentoring younger students through the activities, sharing what they know while developing their own confidence and leadership along the way.

An event of this scale takes considerable planning and many people working together. We are grateful to CME, Albemarle Australia and Rio Tinto for working alongside our staff and students to create this opportunity for young people in our region. Much of the equipment used by Australind Senior High School throughout our activities was sponsored by Tronox.

Grant funding also helped make the Showcase possible, giving regional students access to practical STEM learning and connections with industry. This project received grant funding through Inspiring Australia – An Australian Government Initiative.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring the day together, and to our visiting primary schools for joining us. It was wonderful to see so many young people learning, experimenting and enjoying STEM together.
