3 hours of play in a snap shot.

Chopping up goodies to feed our guinea pigs, feeding the piggies, which then led to potion and water play, adding in dish soap and practising their strong breaths to blow bubbles in the mixture 🩷

We have some new little friends this year, 4 furry cuties who love to snack! The kiddies absolutely love feeding them and listening to their cute little noises they make.

Slow Childhood Down
Kids can’t slow their childhoods down but parents and teachers can, but because nearly all of us who are parents and teachers have been to school, we have married ’school and education’ together as one. This is a big problem for our babies and young children because in a bid to ā€˜educate’ our children we recreate school for them complete with classrooms, teachers, a curriculum, alphabets, reading, writing, maths, teacher directed activities, themes and topics*. The title of a comprehensive study about age appropriate learning from Cambridge University UK says it all, ā€œToo Much Too Soonā€.

As teachers, we need to get up to speed with ā€œTe Wharikiā€ and PRACTICE what’s in there. It is a fantastic document that honours the unfolding of our children’s spirit, intelligence and creativity; and it is not set in the paradigm of school. As parents, we need to shy away from centres that advertise they will ā€œget your child ready for school". That’s a sure sign that there will be ā€˜too much too soon’ at the expense of what your child really needs as an age appropriate education.

People literacy (how to manage myself so I can get along with my species in peace and in conflict) and ecoliteracy (how to live so I can get along with plants and animals in peace and in conflict) come first. Humanity evolved those two bodies of knowledge (literacies) first, and the cultural literacies mentioned above CAME OUT OF PLAY, every last one of them. That’s why ā€œToo Much Too Soonā€ recommends leaving traditional ā€˜school fare’ until age six or seven years of age until the first two literacies are embedded. In place of a ā€˜school for short people’ we need to create the conditions for guaranteed security of a loved adult/adults, adult/s who will have rich and real conversations about the child’s wonderings and their world with them. As well, we need to find-or-create places of beauty where children can play. These are the two basic conditions of Life that every child has wished for since children began. We have it in our power to create these conditions and slow our children’s childhoods down.

*On teachers’ discussion pages there are annual queries on how to deal with ANZAC and The Treaty of Waitangi for ā€˜under twos'. These questions are the clearest indication that teacher training-mentoring doesn’t deal with age appropriate either in content or methodology.

🐰 I can’t believe we’re already celebrating Easter! 🐰

The boys loved our Easter workshop set up this morning and Mr. A was so clever lining up his baby chicks and counting all the way to 20 unassisted!

Earlier is not Better.
Apparently Albert Einstein's parents were really worried about wee Albert because he was 'late' to speak. Look how that turned out. Clearly, taking your time with speaking is does not equal 'thick'. Whenever we adults WANT babies and children to do 'the next step' and then coach-help-assist-make them do it, WE have a problem. When we want children to sit before they can (so we make them, we prop them), walk before they can stand independently (so we make them, holding their hands), write before they want to (so we pressure them, "Write your name"), read before they have shown interest (flash cards labelling every thing in sight) etc - WE have a problem. But it isn't only our problem, it is a problem for the child. As Magda Ge**er noted: how must it be for the child when what s/he CAN do isn't recognised and appreciated, and how must it be to always be expected to do that which is beyond her or him? I wonder if this is the genesis of that all too prevalent feeling, "I don't measure up"?

This is what I’m most passionate about in the Early Childhood Sector!
It’s also so deeply woven into Steiner Pedagogy and how we run our days here.
