- EMOTIONS - 😀😁😭🥺😩🥴

It's safe to say these past few months have been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for our daughter! Isolation and the lack of routine that kindy brings, has brought on some pretty 'big feelings'.

😍 This is one of our favourite things to do. What starts off as a great way to unpack those ugly feelings we are having... Soon turns into a pretty fun morning of silly faces!

🌈 We all know kids experience feelings just like adults.

The difference is, young kids usually don’t have the vocabulary to talk about how they are feeling.

Instead we often see this range of emotions expressed in undesirable ways ; tantrums, silly behaviour or crying. 🥴

🤱As parents we have a really important role to play in helping kids understand their feelings and behaviours. We want our kids to be empathetic, make lasting friendships, have good mental health and resilience. 💪👋

As I have learnt time and time again in the classroom, just because a child can count to 20 and can help their speckled frogs off the logs and monkeys roll out of bed, doesn’t necessarily mean they understand the concept of counting. They have simply remembered the sequence of numbers, much like any other song we sing.

Counting is actually quite complicated! It involves 5 key concepts that must be taught and practised.

One to one correspondence – each dot represents the quantity of ‘one’. We can only say a number for each object we count.

Stable number word order- the sequence for how we count always stays the same (1,2,3,4,5 etc.)

Cardinality- understanding that the last number counted is the number of objects in a collection.

Order irrelevance - objects can be counted in any order, as long as they are counted once.

Abstraction- objects, even if they are dissimilar, can be counted as a set.

🌈 Counting is a foundational skill- we must learn to count, in order to later understand quantity and how quantities can be changed by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

🌈 Counting should become a natural part of your child's day. All day, every day, there are endless things to count!

Our Number Match discs are a great way to introduce numeral matching, counting one to one. You can even play memory match with them!

🎨 PARENTING SHOPPING TRIP HACK 🎨

In the good ole days (pre Covid-19) our fave game to play during the numerous weekend trips to Bunnings, is Paint Chip Match!

We each choose a few of the colour paint chips from the paint section (sorry Bunnings) and have a race to see who can match all their colours to things in the store.

We can get through a lot of aisles without complaints and even get a sausage in peace! Winning!! Hold onto your paint chips and play again in Kmart or on a walk to the park. 🌭

It's a really good way to introduce kids to shades and hues of different colours too.

Why teach colour & shape?

Colour and shape are recognisable characteristics that we use to define and organise the world around us. When we look at an object our minds are instantly recognising its colour and shape in order to know what it is. Colour is one of the first words a child will use to describe things.

Understanding colours and shapes is necessary for the learning of many other curriculum areas, from maths and science to language and reading. A preschooler who is able to tell the difference between shapes is better equipped to notice the differences in the shape of letters and numbers.

When your child plays, they use sorting and classifying skills to observe similarities and differences of colour and shape, make comparisons, and organise visual information in order to make sense of the world. (e.g. things that are round are better for rolling).

Pretty important learning to be done!

It’s no secret, we are lovers of acrylic!
…and why wouldn’t we be.💓 It is such a kid-proof material, which is why we have used it to create our Inkl Kids range. We want our products to be drawn on, stuck in playdough, mud, cloud dough and paint.
After all kids need to be able to touch, explore and get messy. They need to be given the chance to discover the natural world with their senses. This is when true learning is occurring.

Whilst acrylic is more expensive than timber, it is designed to last. Reuse it over and over again… today’s playdough alphabet stamps are tomorrow’s abc mud soup! 🖍️

It’s no secret children learn through play. Threading boards can stimulate creativity as part of this play. It’s a great sensory experience and allows children the freedom to choose patterns and designs to make their creations

The action of threading the string into the holes helps:

Improve fine motor skills, strengthening the muscles of the fingers and thumbs (perfect for pencil grip).

Increase concentration and patience as children complete their board.

Improves bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body at the same time).

Prepare kids for mathematical concepts like length, measurements, counting and patterns.

Develops hand and eye co-ordination. As your child gets more skilled they might like to add beads to their threading.

Like many of you, we have had a bit of time on our hands. With weddings and events on hold, it was time to turn to a true passion of ours… educating young minds.

We have been busily creating our Inkl Kids range. Thoughtfully designed to make learning fun, engaging, multi-sensory and hands on.

Our range of acrylic tracing boards are perfect for helping kids to learn to write their name or alphabet. Simply write with a chalk marker and reuse over and over again!

Our tracing boards are designed with outlines and dots with small arrows to guide children as they are learning to write. Each name board comes with its own set of letters for your child's name 🌈🖍️

Available in each state's school font, making sure letter formations are correct!
