💛 R U OK? Day is coming up, and CQUniversity Australia is helping start the conversation with students across our region.

🧁 All registered TUC & CCUC students are invited to pop into their local centre for a free cupcake and a chance to connect.

☕ CQU students can also pick up a free coffee voucher, organised by CQUniversity, to enjoy at Barron Valley Cafe in Atherton or Freckles Innisfail.

Because sometimes a simple conversation and taking the time to ask “Are you OK?” can make a big difference.

Emily is a mother of three, works three jobs and is studying a Bachelor of Nursing through CQUniversity Australia at the Tablelands Uni Centre. She started working in aged care after high school as her way of "toe dipping into nursing." Life took a few unexpected turns, but the goal never changed. Today, she's balancing family, work and university while building the nursing career she always wanted.

Her commitment was recognised during her first student placement at Atherton Hospital early this year, where staff encouraged her to apply for a position. She's now working as an Assistant in Nursing while continuing her studies.

Along the way, Emily has found a community that understands the realities of balancing study, work and family. Through the TUC's nursing mentoring nights and shared study spaces, she's connected with students a term ahead of her, a term behind, and others studying completely different degrees. Those connections have become an important part of her university journey.

"For people who aren't studying, they often forget how hard it can be. At TUC, we're building our own little village of support... even if we don't see each other all the time, we're able to give each other that little bit of a check-in and offer any assistance when needed."

For Emily, the Tablelands is home. Looking ahead, she sees herself here, caring for her community and continuing to build her nursing career for years to come.

We’re proud to share our latest Bi-Annual Service Highlights Report, showcasing the growing impact of higher education across the Tablelands.

In the first six months of 2026, 44 new students joined the TUC, adding to a growing community of local people studying across different courses and education providers while continuing to live, work and build their futures in our region.

One of the stories featured is Tablelands local Karl, whose career began with a civil engineering cadetship at Tablelands Regional Council. Fifteen years later, he is leading Technical Services at TRC while completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) through the University of Southern Queensland - Australia at the TUC.

“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do when I finished school, and that’s okay,” Karl said. “There are lots of different pathways. You don’t have to have everything figured out straight away.”

Karl’s story is one of many shared in the report, each showing a different way higher education can fit into life on the Tablelands.

Across VPG, our team came together for Wear it Purple Day to show our support for LGBTQIA+ young people and our commitment to creating inclusive spaces for everyone.

Alongside wearing our best purple, our teams took part in activities and conversations to learn more about inclusion, diversity and the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people.

Because every young person deserves to feel safe, valued and proud of who they are. 💜🌈

We’re proud to announce Emily as the Round 2 Civil Geotechnical Consultants (CGC) Scholarship recipient for the Cassowary Coast University Centre.

A born and bred Innisfail local, Emily is completing a Bachelor of Nursing through CQUniversity Australia and has been awarded a $5,000 CGC Scholarship to support her studies.

Emily’s decision to pursue nursing was shaped by her own experience with thyroid cancer as a teenager. During that time, she saw first-hand the difference compassionate nurses can make during some of life’s most challenging moments, inspiring her to pursue a career where she could provide that same care and support to others.

Pictured here on clinical placement at Magnetic Island, Emily is building her nursing experience while balancing full-time study, unpaid placements and work as a Student in Nursing/Assistant in Nursing at Cairns Base Hospital.

She also gives back locally as a CCUC student ambassador, recently speaking with high school students about nursing and the opportunity to pursue higher education without leaving the region.

Emily’s goal is to continue her studies and build a career in healthcare close to home, contributing to the Cassowary Coast community she knows and loves.

The scholarship will help ease the pressure of balancing study, work and placements as she works towards that goal.

Emily’s resilience, determination and contribution to her community stood out to CGC, making her a deserving Round 2 recipient.

A huge congratulations to Emily, and thank you to Civil Geotechnical Consultants for continuing to back local students and invest in our regional communities.

We’re proud to announce Marina as the Round 2 Civil Geotechnical Consultants (CGC) Scholarship recipient for the Tablelands University Centre.

Marina is completing a Bachelor of Nursing through CQUniversity Australia and has been awarded a $5,000 CGC Scholarship to support her final year of study.

Growing up in remote Cape York Peninsula, Marina saw first-hand the challenges rural families can face accessing healthcare, including when members of her own family required medical evacuation.

After more than 20 years working in medical administration across Queensland and Tasmania, Marina decided it was time to turn that experience into something more. She returned to study as a mature-age student, entering university through CQU STEPS enabling program, and became the first person in her family to attend university.

Now living on the Tablelands with her husband and three children, Marina is working towards her goal of becoming a rural nurse and helping improve access to compassionate, culturally safe healthcare in regional communities.

Her final year will include 12 weeks of unpaid clinical placement and residential schools, and the scholarship will help ease the pressure and allow Marina to focus on completing her degree.

Marina’s determination, lived understanding of rural healthcare and commitment to creating better opportunities for the next generation embody exactly what the CGC Scholarship is about.

A huge congratulations to Marina, and thank you to Civil Geotechnical Consultants for continuing to back local students and invest in the future of our regional communities.

Meet Logen, our 200th student at the Cassowary Coast Uni Centre.

Logen moved to Brisbane to study, but soon realised home was where he wanted to build his future. Back in Innisfail, he's now working locally while completing CQUniversity Australia's STEPS pathway, on track to start a Bachelor of Nursing in 2027.

It's a story that means a lot to us. Logen is tracking towards becoming one of the nurses our region needs, and we get to be part of that journey.

Just shy of our second birthday, Logen also marks a milestone for us - 200 locals who've found a way to build a future here, without having to leave.

Welcome to CCUC, Logen. We're very excited to have you apart of our student community!

Back from Sydney with fresh ideas and new connections. ✈️❄️

Recently our team – Emma, Justin, Jade, Gisella and Jenna – were in Sydney attending the Study Hubs Australia Forum, hosted at the UTS: University of Technology Sydney, as part of the Study Hubs in Place (SHIP) initiative.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with Regional University Study Hubs and higher education institutions from across Australia, sharing ideas, learning from one another and exploring new ways to strengthen higher education opportunities in regional communities.

It was a jam-packed few days filled with great conversations, inspiring ideas, a little sightseeing, and the chance to connect with passionate people doing incredible work across the country.

We're home with fresh ideas, stronger connections and plenty of inspiration as we continue supporting higher education students across the Tablelands and Cassowary Coast. 💙

Future university student? 🤔 Or just curious about what uni is really like? Pop over and chat with the team from the Tablelands University Centre at the Malanda State High School Careers Expo today! Open to all of Community from 3pm to 5pm.

The best part? We've got some of our own local university students with us, sharing what it's really like to study from the Tablelands. No brochures or sales pitch, just honest conversations about balancing study, work, family and life close to home.

Whether you're the first in your family to think about university, still figuring out your next step, or just have a million questions, come and have a chat. Sometimes hearing someone else's journey is all it takes to realise, "Maybe I could do that too." 💙
