What is dyslexia?

BUSTING THE MYTHS ABOUT DYSLEXIA 💥

It’s Dyslexia Awareness month! So we wanted to take time to debunk some of the many misconceptions about dyslexia.

MYTH #1 – 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮. While some children with dyslexia do write their letters backwards, some don’t.
MYTH #2 – 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. Incorrect, dyslexia is a neurological condition, genetic in origin.
MYTH #3 – 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱. While intervention makes a big difference in helping dyslexic individuals learn to read it is a lifelong learning disability.
MYTH #4 – 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲. Reading at home and being exposed to reading is important for all children’s learning development. However, dyslexia doesn’t occur because of a lack of exposure to reading.
MYTH #5 – 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱. The amount of effort your child puts into their reading has nothing to do with their ability to read. Research has proven that the brain functions differently in individuals with dyslexia. Therefore, it’s the type of instructions and way of teaching that will make the biggest impact.

How Dyslexia is a Different Brain, Not a Disease Students, parents, and teachers must understand that the dyslexic’s brain isn’t “broken” or deficient, just organized in a different way. And there is specialized reading instruction specifically for the different brain structure.
