Do you know what Q fever is? Have you contracted it? Do you know how it is contracted?

Dr Megan Hobbs and her colleagues from the New England Institute of Healthcare Research would like to hear about your experiences with Q fever.

Complete this brief survey (it takes less than 10 minutes) and help contribute to research about awareness of this infectious disease.

We are looking forward to seeing how the bulls that were part of the trial at Tullimba perform in the upcoming sale.

It was our pleasure to have the Southern New England Landcare's “Koalas in the Spotlight” event on March 19 at the UNE SMART Farms Newholme Field Laboratory. 🐨

Newholme is an established koala corridor and this event was part of the 2021 Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership Project which aims to raise community awareness and involvement in Koala conservation. The event was limited to 40 people and unsurprisingly tickets were in high demand. The good news for those who missed out is that SNELC hope to have another event before the end of the year.

Thank you to Southern New England Landcare and everyone who attended. Stay tuned for more Landcare Koala Partnership events.

Last Friday we had the MLA Flock Resource Field Day at Kirby and the weather was perfect for our group of producers, breeders, students and industry personnel to come together.

The day consisted of talks on the Resource Flock and its role, technologies for measuring carcase traits and improvements in sheep meat quality. We also had the opportunity to look at last year's drop of lambs that are part of the project and some preliminary data on their weight gain. We then observed the high-performance pastures at Kirby that are part of a project with PGG Wrightson seeds.

And to sum up a great day, a delicious lamb cutlet lunch supplied and prepared by the Meat Science team at UNE.

Thank you to all who attended!

UNE farms carbon neutral 02/02/2021

🐄Something to be Graze'ful for!

Research on UNE SMART Farms has found them to be operating on a carbon-neutral basis – at least for now.

This comes as a heartening result for UNE SMART Farms industry engagement manager, Dr Rachelle Hergenhan who ran the carbon accounts on the Farms nearly 3600 hectares.

“We have large areas of native vegetation cover that are regenerating naturally, so it seems likely that even if we restore our grazing capacity over coming years, we will still be carbon-neutral or close to it.”

UNE Smart Farms were excited to host a field day for Red Angus breeder last week!

The field day was held at Tullimba and followed The Invitational Red Angus Bull Sale feed efficiency trial.

The 45 Bulls had just completed 70 day at the plot and were entered by a number of breeders to provide more information for their approaching sale.

We look forward to working further with these Red Angus breeders on future feeding trials!

It was great to welcome a visit from Paraway Pastoral Company and Angus Australia at Tullimba today!

The team checked out the cattle Paraway have on feed here as part of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP) along with a quick look at the tempering plant.

☀🌾What a great day to be out in the field at Toombs Pasture Technology Site!

There was a great turn out at the UNE SMART Farms Pasture Field Day this morning! Participants enjoyed discussions with experts in their field on pasture breeding, renovation programs, and improved pasture systems.

Events such as these allow producers and community members to learn about work happening on the SMART Farms with our industry partners such as PGG Wrightson Seeds and how some of this work may apply to their own properties.
