Good morning from beautiful calm Dizzy and Emma,
We have been spending a lot more time with Dizzy who is now 6 and we are really appreciating her growth and maturity as she blossoms. Before we begin any activities, Emma assesses how she is, checking in on how she’s going in that moment, which led us to this post. ☺️
Each of our horses have their own unique personalities as well as sensitivities. 💜
Did you know that you have your own unique sensory profile?
What many don’t realise is that our sensory needs also change from day to day. When we’re tired, stressed, feeling anxious or overwhelmed, things that normally don’t bother us can suddenly feel too much.
Children and horses are exactly the same.
That’s why when we are working with people or horses, we see behaviours as valuable information about how someone’s nervous system is experiencing the world. Not a reflection of ‘who’ they are, more ‘what’s happening in the moment’.
Most of us learnt about our key five senses :
👀 Sight
👂 Hearing
👃 Smell
👅 Taste
✋ Touch
But there are actually eight sensory systems. We also have:
Vestibular ~ our sense of movement and balance.
Proprioception ~ our awareness of where our body is and how much force we’re using.
Interoception ~ our awareness of what’s happening inside our body, like hunger, thirst, tiredness and emotions.
Imagine arriving here, at Wolverton Station, with..
The smell of the yards..
The crunch of dry grass under your feet..
The warmth of the sun..
The squark of the crows..
The movement of a 500kg horse..
The feel of a lead rope..
The sounds of birds, wind and other horses.
…and planes, vehicles, quads, tractor in the distance.
That’s such a massive amount of sensory information before someone has even touched a horse.
Understanding sensory processing helps us create environments where others feel safe, regulated and ready to connect, learn and grow.
Have you ever stopped to think about just how many sensory experiences exist before you even meet the horse? Or when you arrive at work?
A little food for thought.. ohhh and speaking of food… it’s now time for some fresh eggs and mushrooms 🥚🍳
Have a great Wednesday! 🤎
