Last Term in Art, the 2/3/4 class did a big unit on trees. First they were asked to draw a tree. Almost all of the class drew cloud shaped trees. So they learnt how to draw a range of trees, all different shapes and sizes. Tall, short, thin, wide, trees with small narrow leaves, and trees with broad leaves. They really branched out.
Using trees as their subject, students learnt how to do 1 point and 2 point perspective drawings. 1 point perspective uses one vanishing point on the horizon. They added a road to the picture, with the trees on either side, getting smaller going into the horizon. 2 point perspective uses 2 vanishing points on the horizon, this time at the edge of the paper. This creates the illusion of three dimensional depth.
They made tree pictures using twisted paper to add dimension and texture. They constructed Christmas trees using wool, coated in PVA glue, wrapped around a cardboard cone. Once dry, the cone was removed, and a colourful garland made from little squares of felt was added. Students are currently working on their final piece, a sequinned Christmas tree.
