5 things every mum needs to know to establish breastfeeding 🩷

This morning I ran my Breastfeeding Masterclass, and I wanted to share a quick recap of the five key points we covered.

1. Skin to skin — it's more than just bonding
2. There's no rush for baby to breastfeed straight away
3. Effective milk removal is what makes milk
4. Ni**le pain is common, but it's not normal
5. Cluster feeding is the biological norm

If you'd like personalised support with any of this, we're here to help.

5 things every mum needs to know to establish breastfeeding 🩷

This morning I ran my Breastfeeding Masterclass, and I wanted to share a quick recap of the five key points we covered.

1. Skin to skin, it's about so much more than bonding
2. There's no rush, your baby doesn't need to breastfeed straight away, they need time to learn
3. Effective milk removal is what makes milk, not necessarily breastfeeding from day one
4. Ni**le pain is common, but it's not normal - tenderness is different from pain, and pain usually means the latch isn't right
5. Cluster feeding is the biological norm. One of the hardest and most misunderstood parts of the early days, but completely healthy in a well, term baby

If any of this resonates and you'd like some support along the way:

This World Breastfeeding Week, let's talk about the gap between intention and outcome.

The vast majority of Australian mums want to breastfeed and start out doing so. But by six months, that number drops significantly.

It's rarely about a lack of willingness. It's about whether the right support is there when it's needed, accurate information, timely help, and reassurance that questions are always welcome.

Every consult, every question answered, every bit of confidence built - it all adds up to stronger outcomes for mums and babies.

If you're expecting, or currently navigating your feeding journey, we would love to help.

Did you know breastmilk changes as your baby grows?

One of the World Breastfeeding Week themes this year is nutrition and it's a great excuse to remind ourselves just how remarkable breastmilk really is.

It's not a fixed formula. It's biologically adaptive:
🤍 It changes in the very first days after birth
🤍 It continues adjusting as your baby grows
🤍 It provides nutrients, immune factors and growth factors tailored to your baby's needs
🤍 It supports gut health and immune development in ways we're still learning about

There's no other food quite like it, made specifically, and continuously, for one baby.
That doesn't mean breastfeeding always feels easy. It's a skill, and like any skill, it can take time, patience and support to establish.

If you're navigating your feeding journey right now, know that support is always here.

Why are
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) services the GOLD STANDARD in breastfeeding support?

IBCLC's are the most highly qualified professionals specialising in infant feeding.

TRAINING:
🤍 At least 1000 hours of supervised clinical breastfeeding support
🤍 At least 95 hours of lactation-specific accredited training

Only then can we apply to sit the exam — a global exam with a high pass rate (often near 80%). Once we pass, we're finally an IBCLC! It can take years to get here.

To keep practicing, we re-certify every 5 years by completing 75+ hours of accredited learning or resitting the exam. Our knowledge is constantly tested, ensuring we stay current with the latest evidence and best practice.

IBCLCs work across hospital, community, public and private settings, supporting every area of infant feeding — from breastfeeding preparation, to your baby's very first feed, right through to weaning, and everything in between.

We're the ONLY feeding specialists who can offer comprehensive support, from the fundamentals of positioning and latch through to complex feeding issues.

There are many breastfeeding "specialists" out there, but before you book with someone to support you through such a vulnerable time, check their credentials and make sure they hold an IBCLC qualification!

Many courses exist to become a breastfeeding counsellor. Midwives can offer basic support with positioning and latch, and many IBCLCs aren't midwives. Personally, I believe the GOLD STANDARD is being a midwife first — it gives a deeper understanding of women's hormones and how pregnancy and birth affect mum, baby and lactation. It means being truly "with woman," offering not just physical support, but the emotional support needed through such a precious time.

It's World Breastfeeding Week!

Every year from 1–7 August, the world comes together to celebrate and support breastfeeding and this year's theme is a good one: Strengthen what works.
Because breastfeeding doesn't happen in isolation. It's shaped by the support around a mum, her partner, her family, her workplace, her health providers, and her community.

When that support is strong, breastfeeding becomes so much more sustainable, for mums, for babies, and for the systems around them.

This week is about celebrating every mum in the thick of her feeding journey, whoever is supporting her along the way, and the incredible adaptability of breastmilk itself.

Mums don't need more pressure. They need the right support, at the right time.
That's exactly what Best Start is here for.

This week we're shining a light on Jody from Zen Mumma.

Zen Mumma was born from Jody's own breastfeeding journey with her daughter, which began in 2023. Like so many new mums, she quickly discovered that while breastfeeding is natural, it doesn't always come naturally.

Along the way, Jody spent countless hours researching pumps, troubleshooting issues, and searching for products that were genuinely helpful, high quality and affordable, often feeling overwhelmed by choice and frustrated by how hard it was to access the right support locally when she needed it most.

That experience inspired her to create Zen Mumma, a small Perth-based business dedicated to making breastfeeding support more accessible. Jody wanted mums to have access to carefully selected, high-quality products at fair prices, without long wait times, and someone honest to turn to for genuine advice and support.

Zen Mumma officially launched in October 2024, and the name reflects exactly what Jody hopes to be for every mum she supports: calm, nurturing and supportive.

From wearable breast pumps to feeding accessories, Jody's goal is simple, helping every mum feel supported, informed and empowered on her own unique journey.

Jody strongly believes every breastfeeding journey is different, but no mum should have to navigate it alone.

We love being part of a community of small businesses and healthcare professionals who all share that same passion for supporting mums and babies.

Make sure you check out Zen Mumma and show Jody some love.

Know a mum-owned business we should feature next? Tag them below or send us a message — we'd love to hear from you!
