As we move past the six-month mark since Australia’s social media age restrictions came into effect, I thought it was worth sharing an update directly from the eSafety Commissioner.
Since 10 December 2025, age-restricted social media platforms have been required to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or keeping accounts.
In this update, the eSafety Commissioner talks about what they have seen so far — including the removal of millions of under-16 accounts, the ongoing monitoring of platforms, and feedback from families who say the changes have helped shift conversations around technology and screen use at home.
The Commissioner also acknowledges that changes of this scale take time. This isn't simply about removing an app from a child's phone; it is about changing the way we think about children's online experiences, the design of social media platforms and how we support young people to develop healthy digital habits.
