"This is the exquisite difficulty of parenting: in the moments that stretch us most, our children need us to hold two things that can, at times, feel impossible to hold together.

Warmth and boundaries. Expectations and support. The limit and the relationship.

They need us to stay warm without becoming permissive. Firm without becoming frightening.

To hold the boundary with steady hands, and relationship with gentle ones. To lead without controlling, connect without surrendering, and to stay steady when feelings are running big."

Parenting has a particular way of bringing all of us to the same place eventually. It usually starts with a perfectly reasonable no. Sometimes to a perfectly unreasonable request. Or an untimely one. Today is Early Childhood Educators' Day and an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and celebrate the team at Angle Vale Preschool. Our educators go above and beyond each day to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to be themselves. With genuine care, they challenge and inspire our children to stretch, grow, and reach their full potential.

Thank you to our exceptional educators for the positive difference you make in the lives of our children and families. And happy Early Childhood Educators' Day to the wider community across Australia.

Great heights is one of Ellen Sandseter’s 6 categories of Risky Play. And as this photo shows, even superheroes like to test their limits!

I find it fascinating to watch the high level of care children intrinsically take to position themselves in spots like these. After scaling the milk crates, the Hulk sat and watched everything taking place from his new vantage point, in a rare moment of stillness.

Sandseter’s research includes a wonderful quote from a four-year-old child, who described risky play as “scary funny.” It perfectly sums up the unique blend of exhilaration and fear children feel when they’re pushing their limits.

How do your children engage in “scary funny” play?

If your child isn't sharing much about their kindy adventures with you at home, this article offers some helpful ideas. Instead of asking, 'How was kindy today?', one big shift is to ask, 'What's the best thing that happened at kindy today?'

If you want to know how your child's day at school was, the number one tip is — don't ask them.

The Inklings Program supports families with babies aged 6 – 18 months who are showing early differences in their social interaction and communication. The Program builds caregiver confidence in understanding and responding to their baby through up to 10 sessions with a supportive, trained practitioner.

If you live in SA and your baby is aged 6-18 months, you may be eligible to participate in the Inklings Program. Inklings is funded in WA by the NDIS.
