Swiftie the School Swift Parrot

After spending three successive years planting Eucalyptus viminalis in a paddock at school as part of the Threatened Woodland Birds Project, and learning about the plight of the critically endangered Forty Spotted Pardalote, the children of Bruny Islands Prep/1 class decided to turn their attention to another one of our precious threatened bird species. Swift Parrot populations are declining drastically because of a multitude of human impacts, including reduced habitat and food supply and introduced species predation. The kids of Bruny School decided that the Swifties need our help! Lacking much artistic ability myself, I approached kitchen garden specialist, school mum and local artist and maker, Nicole Adams to help. Together with some financial support from NRM South we came up with a creative way to put a spotlight on this very special bird! Nicole used her expert welding skills to create the frame of a giant swift parrot and decided that the feathers could be made from recycled fabric. This proved an ingenious way to engage children of all ages to be part of Swifties colourful creation. Over the next 2 school terms students across all grades and our launching into learning program, plus many parents and teachers, enjoyed the mindful task of tying colourful feathers onto Swiftie the School Swift Parrot. She can now be seen proudly perched outside the school grounds on Bruny Island Main Road, Alonnah as part of the Bruny Bird Festival Sculpture Trail. Hopefully, Swiftie gains lots of attention and gets the wider community and visitors talking about this beautiful but critically endangered bird.
