Totally agree! Camps build so much resilience in young people! Podcast worth listening to and hear unique perspectives on experiential learning.

As a parent, if you have ever questioned the benefits of sending your child on school camp, then this podcast is for you.

‘Resilience: Why school camps matter’ is the latest podcast in Beaconhills College’s BeInTheKnow series and features guest speakers Stephen McGinley, Executive Principal, our Head of Experiential Education, Lahlan Groh, and alum Tahlia Ziino, who is now part of the Beacon Explorers team.

At Beaconhills College, camps and experiential learning programs are designed to help young people develop one of life's most important skills: resilience. The value of these experiences is often realised long after the camp has ended. As Pakenham Campus student Ella, who recently returned from East Timor, reflected:

"This trip made me more resilient by realising I don't need much to survive and be happy and to be grateful for everything. During the trip, we got to see different homes and schools and seeing how few possessions and limited access to water and electricity challenged my perspective on what I considered normal …despite these hardships, the children were always happy and grateful, so it allowed me to be more resilient to push through hard times."

What a great way of building leadership skills and networking at the same time. It was a pleasure to host CFA SER Women's Network and see all these women push themselves out of their comfort zone, encourage and support each other to tackle challenges they never thought they would be able to do and see them build confidence. Every single participant can be very proud of herself and what she has achieved over the weekend!

Camps give young people something increasingly rare – time outdoors, time with friends and time to grow.

They’re also a different kind of classroom, where learning happens through shared experiences, teamwork and time in nature.

Time outdoors supports wellbeing and healthy development, while hands-on activities help young people build confidence and real-world life skills.

Our members see this every day as young people develop skills and memories that last a lifetime.
