Indigenous, Independent School, Alice Springs. Teaching two ways since 1978. Yipirinya School is the true school of Alice Springs.

Yipirinya School, founded in 1978, is one of the few genuinely Independent Aboriginal Schools in Australia, both founded and controlled by Indigenous Elders. We takes our name from the caterpillar dreamtime of the Arrernte people of Central Australia. It was established as a two–way school, bi-lingual and bi-cultural, to teach White man’s way following the Northern Territory Curriculum, and also t

What an incredible moment at the official opening of the Anthepe Community Centre today!

It was truly special to see Doris O’Brien, one of Yipirinya’s very first teachers, cut the ribbon at the opening, right in her home community of Anthepe.

Doris began teaching with Yipirinya School back in 1978, since the very start, teaching in Western Arrernte in the early town camps. There was very little to teach with, but families and Elders worked together to foster learning in their own languages.

Yipirinya was founded through the vision and determination of community leaders like Eli Rubuntja, Doris’s father, who fought for Aboriginal control for their children’s education.

From those early days under the trees to now seeing a beautiful new Community Centre opened, this is a powerful story of strength and self-determination. Doris continues to teach at Yipirinya today, carrying that same vision forward for the next generation.

Well done to the families, Tangentyere Council, and the Anthepe community!

🌟 A First for Yipirinya! 🌟

Four of our senior students have had an incredible experience, travelling more than 500km north from Alice Springs to the Juno Skills Centre in Tennant Creek to complete their Certificate II in Horse Care (Skill Set) through Intercept Training

Over two intensive weeks, the students gained hands-on experience in:
✅ Safe horse handling and care
✅ Feeding, health and welfare
✅ Stable and paddock maintenance
✅ Workplace safety and communication

This was the first time a Central Region school has joined VET training at Juno in many years — a huge achievement for both the students and the school!

Thanks to the flexibility of Intercept Training, weekend sessions were added so the students could complete the program and still return home for an important community event — a great example of partnership and respect for culture.

This success reflects the hard work and dedication of our students and staff, and the strong collaboration between Yipirinya School, Skills NT and Intercept Training.

Together, we’re showing how vocational education can open doors for remote learners while keeping them connected to culture and community.

Some great learning in Year 3 today!
The students have been exploring all about money — counting coins and notes, comparing amounts, and building confidence to use their skills in real-life situations.
