The Northern Territory Government is reassuring families that all NT government schools remain open, with no school closures required, following the national recall of several children’s coloured sand products.
Air testing at 10 NT government school sites has returned clear results, with no airborne or respirable asbestos detected.

National and Territory testing continues to show the risk to human health is low.

The Department of Education and Training is supporting schools and early childhood education and care (ECEC) services with containment, cleaning and safe disposal in line with NT WorkSafe advice.

Some services and four schools will adjust programs on Monday 17 November to allow for cleaning; families have been notified directly.

Territorians are encouraged to stop using recalled coloured sand products and follow safe disposal advice.

The Department of Education and Training continues to work with NT WorkSafe and NT Health following a national recall of several brands of children’s coloured sand products that may contain chrysotile or tremolite asbestos.

Air testing undertaken has returned clear results, with no airborne or respirable asbestos detected. The risk to human health remains low.

There will be no government school closures, and there are no notified closures in the non-government school sector.

The three early childhood services that were closed today, Monday 17 November, have been cleaned and will be open tomorrow, Tuesday 18 November 2025.
