Our Year 8 students had an incredible time at their surf camp in Anglesea this March, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From catching their first waves to building confidence in the water, the camp was full of energy, laughter, and new challenges. Beyond surfing, students strengthened friendships, showed resilience, and embraced every opportunity to step outside their comfort zones. It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm, teamwork, and positive spirit throughout the trip—an experience that truly captured the essence of adventure and growth.

Anna's special tribute to our local heroes.

Around a year and a half ago, Anna first learned to weld in her Year 9 Auto Welding class. She began by welding different shapes of steel together, gradually building her skills until she could confidently adjust the machines to achieve the correct settings for each job. Once she was competent, she needed a project to put her skills to the test.

At around the same time, the Alexandra Fire Brigade decided they would install a letterbox for the postie instead of continuing to rent a PO box. During a brigade meeting, the idea of a small fire truck–shaped letterbox was suggested. Not long after, when Anna was ready for a project, the idea was passed on to her.

With some wheelie bin wheels and axles that had belonged to the late Sue Dundas years earlier, the project quite literally got “rolling.” The body was made entirely from 1.6mm black mild steel sheet. An off-cut long enough to form the sides and base was shaped to match the angle of the windscreen and the lower rear section over the “tank.” Anna carefully cut and folded this piece, then fabricated the front panel, including a mail slot positioned at the top of the windscreen to fit an A4 envelope. This panel was tack welded into place.

Another sheet was prepared to extend from the windscreen sun visor to the back door, requiring 12 precise folds. It was formed from one continuous sheet, each fold completed in sequence, and then tack welded together with three additional small panels beside and at the bottom of the back door. Once satisfied with the fit, Anna welded every seam.

With the main fabrication complete, it was time to create the accessories that would truly bring the fire truck to life. She made detailed features including windscreen wipers, door mirrors, a bullbar, rollbar, light bar, triple extension ladder, side handrails for climbing onto the back, and swinging side steps mounted on bike chain — just like those on full-sized fire trucks, designed to swing out of the way if they clip a stump and then drop back down again.

Anna worked on these details during spare time in her VET Auto class, alongside another major car tray toolbox project she was completing in her Year 10 welding class. As the miniature fire truck began to take shape and sat nearly finished on a shelf in the sheetmetal room, a junior class stopped to admire it. One student said to another, “That’s Anna’s Fire Truck.”

Finally, a back door was fitted with hinges and lock tabs, and at the end of Year 10 the entire project was painted in the correct fire brigade colours. Now in Year 11, Anna carefully applied the finishing stickers to her incredibly detailed creation before proudly presenting the completed fire truck letterbox — and its keys — to the brigade.

The timing of this gift makes it even more special given our recent bushfires.

Anna’s own family experienced first hand the impact of the fires in January, while they were fortunate to save their home, they lost their hay shed and cattle yards.

This small fire truck letterbox now stands not only as a testament to Anna’s skill, patience and dedication, but also as a heartfelt thank you. As a community, we are deeply grateful for the courage, commitment and countless volunteer hours given by our local fire brigade. They are there when we need them most — protecting our homes, our livelihoods and our families — and Anna’s thoughtful and beautifully crafted gift is a fitting tribute to the work they do for us all.
