Everyone's talking about ChatGPT. Almost no one's talking about Claude.

We should be.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, and honestly, it's given us some of the most thoughtful, useable output we've seen from a generative AI tool. It's especially strong with big chunks of text, which matters when your job involves syllabus documents, policies, and reports that are dense enough to make your eyes glaze over.

Here's where Claude actually earns a spot in your toolkit:

→ Summarising lengthy curriculum documents and policies (goodbye, jargon)
→ Lesson planning and resource development
→ Generating discussion questions and learning activities
→ Drafting assessment tasks and marking criteria
→ Adapting content for different year levels and abilities
→ Extracting key information from large documents

None of this means ditching the tools you already use. Run the same prompt through Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and you'll get three different angles worth combining. That's the whole point of testing more than one tool.

Technology should never create financial stress.

That's the line. If an edtech tool is making you anxious about your bank balance, it's failed before it's even started.

We know the reality. Not every school hands out copious funds for the latest tools, and policies and procedures can mean personally forking out for things that should never have been our responsibility in the first place.

So let's get clear on what good edtech actually looks like:

→ It saves you time, it doesn't eat it
→ It improves student learning outcomes (there has to be a purpose, not novelty)
→ It increases engagement
→ It reduces your workload through reusable systems and workflows
→ It's sustainable, not a $19-a-month subscription you use once and forget

Saw a comment recently claiming that any teacher using AI is lazy and incompetent. Let's unpack that.

AI is part of our world now, the same way whiteboards, overhead projectors and photocopiers were once "new" and questioned. It's not going anywhere, and there's nothing lazy about using a tool well.

The biggest win for me? Time. AI helps me kickstart new unit plans, especially with brand-new syllabuses where there's nothing existing to work from yet. It generates a starting point I can then shape, check and make my own.

That last part matters. AI makes mistakes. I've had it invent characters that don't exist in the text we're studying. So I never publish anything straight from AI without reading it properly first. It's a starting point, not the finished product.

Using AI doesn't replace your professional judgement. It supports it. You're still the expert in the room.

Gamification without needing 30 devices. That's why Bamboozle earns its spot as one of my favourite tools.

Two big problems with gamified EdTech tools like Kahoot or Blooket: not every classroom has one-to-one devices, and a lot of these tools get expensive fast.

Bamboozle solves both. You only need one teacher device and a screen — projector, SMART Board, or main learning display. Log in, pull up your game, and go.

We've played question rounds, baseball, even ten-pin bowling with it. My Year 10s ask for it every spare moment. One class-versus-class battle a few years back got so loud we actually got pulled up by our head teacher. Still one of the most rewarding lessons of my career.

I do pay for it, and I'm genuinely honest about that — but only because I use it consistently enough to justify the cost. Bamboozle also has a solid free version if you want to test it out first.
