Working on chain wrestling tonight but instead of waiting for our partner to react, we just go for it. π
Basically the drill boiled down to you couldn't take your partner down until you hit 3 different positions. The other partner is trying to not fall over on level 1 and then trying to defend and break away to strike for level 2. πͺπ₯
By changing strategy 3 times in quick succession you really get ahead of your partner in the offence defence game and maximise your chance of success.
If you wait until they react before you transition then they are already waiting for your next move.
Nice work by the team tonight trying out different transitions and exploring what works for them best. One of the reasons why everyone here has their own style rather than have a cookie cutter gym of everyone being the same. π₯°
SBG Western Australia
SBGWA is about having fun and learning jiu jitsu in a safe and inclusive environment.
Working striker vs grappler this week. π Striker only has strikes and must avoid the strong clinch. Wrestler has all the tools and needs to get a strong clinch with their hands locked together. π Don't care if it's on the legs, body or head.
Our Teens MMA group haven't been doing MMA for long, but are doing a great job already. All about doing the thing and refining as we go. π

Couple of matches from our fight night series where we are bridging the gap between training and competing for our local athletes. It's so hard to get experience down here in Albany compared to the big metro areas, so we are doing everything we can to build up our team with these. π
Contact us at SBGWA and with only a few months training you could find yourself in the mix to jump in and work towards getting on the card.

Working on entering the clinch on the wall by getting the hands up first. We want clean shoulder to body connection to create the best chance for a successful wrestling chain.
Get the hands up.
Shoot.
Chain wrestling movements together.
Finish your work by keeping them on the ground.
Another great night of work by the team.

We got to fulfill a lifelong dream tonight in watching a live UFC event in Perth compliments of my young bloke Reece. π
We got into MMA maybe 18 odd years ago back when you had to go into Blockbusters and hire the DVDs, then started training a few years after that.
Great night of fights and picked up a few tricks along the way from some of the best to do it. So good to see some of the WA boys do well and also see one of my favourite fighters on the card in Tim Elliot.
Can't wait to get back in the gym and incorporate some new tricks. πͺ
Feeling super grateful to be given the experience with my best mate in the whole world. (20th anniversary in a few weeks too) π See you all next week!
Working on catching and throwing kicks to the body tonight.
The base drill.
Land a kick to the body to win a point.
Catch a kick to the body to win a point.
A couple of good strategies for landing kicks and not getting them caught.
1. Get your partners hands busy doing something else before you throw the kick. Eg. Defending punches to the head, dealing with a wrestling shot ect.....
2. Throwing to the open side where it's very difficult to catch.
By keeping drills simple you allow individuals to find their own style and work at their own level.
By creating aliveness in your drills people can work timing and close the gap between skill acquisition and skill application in an actual match.
Excellent work by the team tonight as we ran this drill in both our Teens and Adults MMA programs and both groups were able to implement this into their sparring.

Come down and try out a session for free. You'll be looked after, have fun and learn some cool s**t while you are at it. π
Working on killing the guard by using lateral movement to try and get both legs to one side tonight.
1. Pressure the guard until you can't go forwards any more.
2. Big lateral movement maintaining connection and pressure on the guard.
3. Kill the bottom leg by pinning the thigh or lifting the foot to help prevent guard recovery movements.
Then you just run it with your partner. They try to stop you, you try and do the thing.
Passing the guard is a complex problem to solve. By breaking it into a smaller problem by just focusing on one strategy it suddenly becomes a much more manageable task and you build up a transferable skill rather than learn a step by step technique.
So anytime you are passing the guard and can't go forwards anymore, just try moving laterally. π₯°

Term 2 kids programs starting this week!
Kids BJJ 8+ yrs on Monday and Wednesday arvos from 5-5:45pm. We will be focusing on takedowns and wrestling this term with an end of term competition.
Teens MMA 12+ on Tuesday and Thursday arvos from 5-5:45pm
Both are $350/term or $450 to do both. π
We pride ourselves on providing a safe environment for the kids to thrive in and use progressive game based methodologies rather than endless repetitive forms. This keeps the kids engaged and gets them doing the thing right from the start.
Fun, engaging and practical. π₯°π¦π§
