Airville State School A small rural primary school at 920 Old Clare Rd, Ayr. Classes run 9am–3pm, with supervision from 8am–4pm Monday to Friday.

Surrounded by cane fields, we offer great facilities, low student-to-teacher ratios and a supportive learning environment. Recently, we were lucky enough to welcome visitors from Home Hill State High School to spend some time with our senior students.

Our students had the chance to hear about some of the awesome subjects, activities and opportunities available at high school and learn a little more about what they can look forward to in the years ahead.

But it wasn't all talk! 🌱 Our students also got hands-on with some planting and enjoyed listening to some very information the way.

Visits like these are a wonderful opportunity for our senior students. They help make the move to high school feel a little more familiar, give students the chance to ask questions and, most importantly, get them excited about the next stage of their learning journey.

A big thank you to the Home Hill State High School team for taking the time to visit our little school and share your knowledge and enthusiasm with us.

Does my child need to be able to read before Prep?
No!

Preparing for Prep isn't about sitting your four-year-old down with worksheets or making sure they can read and write before their first day.
Some of the most useful things you can practise are everyday independence skills.

Your Prep 2027 Parent Checklist:

☐ Carrying their own school bag
☐ Putting on their shoes
☐ Opening and closing their lunchbox
☐ Eating and drinking independently
☐ Going to the toilet independently
☐ Recognising their own belongings
☐ Asking an adult for help when they need it
☐ Following simple everyday routines

And don't forget the really important things – talk, read, play, explore and have fun together!

One of our favourite things about being a small school is watching friendships grow across different year levels.

At Airville, our multi-age environment means our younger and older students don't spend their entire school day separated by age.

They learn together. They play together. They help each other.

Our younger students have wonderful role models right beside them, while our older students have opportunities to develop patience, responsibility, leadership and confidence.

And sometimes the roles are reversed — because you'd be surprised what our littlest learners can teach the big kids too! 😊

There is something very special about watching a Year 6 student stop to help a younger child, seeing everyone join the same game at lunchtime, or watching students encourage each other when something is tricky.

Different ages. Different strengths. One little school community. 💙

Being a small school certainly doesn't mean missing out!

At Airville, our students have access to a fantastic range of technology to support their learning — including computers, iPads, interactive whiteboards and other digital equipment.

Technology gives our students another way to research, create, problem-solve and demonstrate what they know. It also allows us to connect beyond our little school, with students participating in online learning opportunities including Science, Music, Drama, Dance and Japanese.

But we also believe in balance. 💙

Some days you'll find us researching on a computer, and other days we'll be outside investigating, creating with our hands, reading a book or learning together around a table.

It's not technology for technology's sake — it's about having the right tools to make learning engaging and meaningful.

Learning is always easier with a full tummy!

At Airville State School, we’re very fortunate to provide our students with a substantial morning tea every school day, with plenty of variety including fresh fruit, crackers and cheese, muesli bars and other tasty options.

Then on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, lunch is on us too! 🥪🍝

Some weeks it might be yummy sandwiches, while other weeks our students enjoy a delicious cooked lunch. It’s another little way we can support our students and make their school day that bit easier for our families.

Good food, happy kids and plenty of energy for learning! 💙

There’s something pretty special about being part of a small school.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Recently, our students headed out on an excursion to Plantation Park as part of our English learning this term.

Across the school, our students are exploring persuasive texts — learning how to form an opinion, support it with strong reasons and evidence, consider different points of view, and communicate their ideas in a way that might just convince someone else!

For our senior students, this learning has a very exciting real-world purpose. They are looking closely at Plantation Park and developing their own ideas about how this fantastic community space could be made even better. At the end of the term, they will have the opportunity to present their ideas to our Mayor!

Plantation Park gave us plenty to investigate. With its Nature Play area, accessible playground, shelters and BBQ facilities, Juru Walk and creek viewing platform, it is already a wonderful space for local families and visitors to enjoy.

Our excursion gave the students the chance to look at the park through a different lens — What works well? Who uses the space? What could be improved? And, most importantly, can we persuade others that our idea is worth considering?

Learning persuasive writing helps children do much more than write a good English assignment. It teaches them to think critically, organise their thoughts, justify their opinions, listen to other perspectives and communicate confidently.

We can't wait to see what ideas our students come up with — and we're especially looking forward to seeing our seniors put their persuasive skills to the ultimate test when they meet the Mayor!
