WOW!

What an amazing second day of conference! The day kicked off with an amazing presentation by Professor Angela Berndt - who reflected on legacy and the powerful DNA of Occupation Therapy at UniSA (was there a dry eye in the house - no comment).

This legacy was carried on by our graduating cohort through their presentations, speeches and prizes as the day carried on!

Graduating class of 2025 - we are so proud of you and what you will do in the world!

Well that's a wrap on Day 1 of the CommunOT student conference.

We enjoyed a fabulous keynote address by Rochelle Mutton, some amazing sponsor presentation and a day full of the students sharing their amazing work throughout their placements!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐭?
Playing the drums. I’ve always wanted to get a sense of rhythm but have never found the time. Seriously though, I’ve always loved playing music with other people and would love to be able to be on the drums.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?
Contribute to a better understanding of how people’s opportunities for healthy occupation are determined by social and institutional environments. Better describing how factors inside and outside the body interrelate will help produce more just and effective responses, especially for marginalised communities.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭?
How emerging understandings of the brain are influencing practice in all areas. There’s so much new research coming out that opens up new opportunities for OT practice, but also the risk of reductionism.

I tell my (4.5yr old) daughter that I teach the “really big kids” how to help people who can’t do the things they want to do when they are sick

Goal setting, some people just go through life doing but setting goals and breaking them down to achievable steps is a game changer

I love doing occupations outdoors; exercise, picnics, social catch ups. I guess that’s the environment I can’t live without

For OT week we asked our team to answer some of the OT Australia OT in Action questions. Kicking off with Linda!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠?
What a privilege the role of the community aged care occupational therapist is. Being invited into people’s homes where they share intimate details of their private lives and struggles. Working collaboratively with those clients to help them be able to do the occupations they need and want to do has always been incredibly rewarding for me.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐱?
I enjoy a vast array of relaxing occupations after work including sewing, reading, and spending time with my family. One occupation that is significantly meaningful to me is my weekly attendance at parkrun. I love travelling to different events (locally and interstate) and find the social connection, sense of community, connecting with friends and nature whilst exercising and getting vitamin D are all a wonderful way to unwind!

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞?
A tricky question indeed but I think I would choose England – what a treat to have an entire year to explore the history, the home place of Jane Austen and Shakespeare and so many wonderful literary giants. Bonus, a great starting point to travel other countries in Europe!
