Sometimes I make time to speak with one or two girls from our underground schools in Afghanistan. I try to give them hope and positive thoughts.

Last night, one girl told me she was depressed and had lost hope. I tried to comfort her, saying, “Don’t take it too seriously. Some things are beyond your control. Focus on what you have.”

She replied with something that left me speechless:

“You are telling me to enjoy the view while I’m falling from the 20th floor.”

I had no words.

I continued talking with her until her mood changed, and thankfully, we ended our conversation with her feeling happier.

But honestly,
How hard is to be a girl living in Afghanistan under Taliban regime?

Today in Canberra, at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, an event was organized to appreciate the work and diplomatic efforts of His Excellency Wahidullah Waissi. On behalf of the Afghan girls’ underground schools, Erfan Abidi had the honor of presenting him with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his advocacy for Afghan girls’ rights and for amplifying their voices.

We deeply value his support and continued efforts in standing with Afghan women and girls and ensuring their voices are heard.

While the world feels increasingly divided and chaotic, and while I am fully aware of the limited capacity of our small team, moments like these remind me why we continue.

Seeing Afghan girls receive an education when much of the world has turned its back on them, and when they are denied this basic right by an oppressive regime in their own country, fills me with both hope and determination.

What our team offers may seem small a helping hand, a gesture of care, an act of compassion but for these girls, it represents opportunity, dignity, and hope for a better future.

One thing continues to inspire me: humanity always finds a way. And hope, no matter how fragile it may seem, is what keeps us alive and moving forward, even in our darkest moments, reminding us that every act of kindness matters and that a brighter future is still worth believing in.
