Today, we honour the courage and sacrifice of Australians who served in Bomber Command during WWII.
From 1941, increasing numbers of Australians joined Bomber Command in Britain, flying missions deep into enemy territory as part of the Allied bombing offensive.
They served in both Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Air Force squadrons, often in multinational crews, taking part in major operations against German cities and industrial centres. These missions were among the most dangerous of the war.
Around 10,000 Australians served with Bomber Command and nearly 4,000 lost their lives in what became one of Australia’s costliest air campaigns of the war.

This week marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, a time to reflect on our shared histories. This year’s theme “All In” calls on all Australians to step off the sidelines and commit to reconciliation every day through actions that create meaningful change.
Veterans SA recognises the South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans who have served in past conflicts and the more than 700 veterans who continue to contribute to our communities every day.
We also pay tribute to the work of Aboriginal Veterans SA to share the stories of local heroes, creating a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture, tradition and service among younger generations.
