⚠️ BUTTON BATTERY FIRST AID HAS CHANGED

Would you know what to give a baby under 12 months after a suspected button battery ingestion?

The answer is jam. Not honey. 🍓

ANZCOR has updated its First Aid guidance for suspected button battery ingestion.

👶 Under 12 months:
Give 10 mL (2 teaspoons) of jam every 10 minutes while getting urgent medical care. Do not give honey.

🧒 Over 12 months:
Give 10 mL (2 teaspoons) of honey every 10 minutes while getting urgent medical care. If honey isn't available, use jam.

🚑 Suspected button battery ingestion is a medical emergency.

Seek medical care immediately. Do not delay getting help to give jam or honey.

If the person has difficulty breathing or bleeding, give nothing by mouth.

But prevention is always better.

Button batteries are small, shiny and easy for young children to pick up.

Check toys, remotes, scales, watches and other household devices. Make sure battery compartments are secure, and keep loose or used batteries completely out of children's reach.

For childcare centres, schools and workplaces supporting children, this is also a timely reminder to check your environment — not just your First Aid procedures.

Our practical training is delivered by industry-experienced trainers and contextualised to the people and workplaces we train.

Did you know about the new jam recommendation?

After watching the tree grow for a while, we were able to pick some apples off the tree.
The Kindy and Treefrog children were able to eat them, yummy.

Throughout last term we had the joy of having three of our previous students attend the centre to do work experience/placement. It was a delight seeing them all again, and seeing how much they have grown.

Thank you girls for choosing to return to Early steps.

Today, we pause to remember the bravery, sacrifice and spirit of the ANZACs, and all who have served since, and continue to serve.

Their legacy lives on in the values we carry forward each day.

Lest we forget.
