C is for COMMUNITY 💚

As Catholic Schools Open Week comes to a close, we finish our FRESC series with something that is at the heart of St Mary’s Memorial School – Community.

At St Mary’s, Community is about building strong, supportive relationships and creating a place where everyone feels welcomed, connected and valued.

It’s seen in the friendships between our students, the connections between families and staff, the way we celebrate together and the support we show one another every day.

Together, our FRESC values – Faith, Respect, Excellence, Service and Community – help shape the caring and connected school community we are proud to be part of.

S is for SERVICE 💚

It’s still Catholic Schools Open Week, and today our FRESC spotlight turns to Service.

At St Mary’s, Service is about looking beyond ourselves and finding ways to make a positive difference, both within our school and in the wider community.

Whether it’s caring for our environment, helping others, supporting those in need or simply noticing when someone could use a hand, our students learn that service can be part of everyday life.

Through these experiences, we encourage kindness, compassion and generosity, helping our students understand that even the smallest actions can have a meaningful impact.

E is for EXCELLENCE 💙

As we continue celebrating Catholic Schools Open Week, today we shine a light on Excellence – the next of our FRESC values.

Excellence isn’t about being the best – it’s about doing your best.

We encourage our students to be curious, have a go, persevere when things are challenging and take pride in their learning. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the sporting field, through the arts or in the way they conduct themselves, we recognise effort, growth and achievement in all its forms.

It’s about helping every child discover what they are capable of and encouraging them to keep learning, growing and striving.

R is for RESPECT 💙

As we continue celebrating Catholic Schools Open Week, today we shine a light on the next of our FRESC values – Respect.

Faith • Respect • Excellence • Service • Community

At St Mary’s Memorial School, Respect is about recognising the value in every person. It’s in the way our students listen to one another, celebrate differences, show kindness and make sure others feel included.

These everyday moments help build strong relationships and create a school where every child feels known, valued and that they belong.

It’s Catholic Schools Open Week, and this week we’re celebrating what sits at the heart of St Mary’s Memorial School – our FRESC values.

Faith • Respect • Excellence • Service • Community

We begin with Faith. 💜

At St Mary’s, Faith is about helping our students develop a strong sense of belonging, purpose and connection. It’s reflected in the way we care for one another, encourage kindness and compassion, support wellbeing, and help every child grow in confidence and understand the positive difference they can make.

Throughout Catholic Schools Open Week, we’ll shine a light on each of our FRESC values and what they look like in action across our school.

The perfect way to wrap up our Feast Day celebrations was with one of the most loved events on our school calendar – our Market of Hope!

Led by our Year 6 students, the Market of Hope showcases their entrepreneurial spirit, giving students the opportunity to develop ideas, create or source products, plan and promote their stalls, manage money and put their learning into action. Our Year 5 students also added to the fun by planning and running games and activities.

This year, students raised funds for the Hutt St Centre, Dolly's Dream and Progeria, combining creativity, problem-solving and teamwork with the opportunity to make a positive difference for others.

Thank you to our students, staff, families and friends for making the Market of Hope such a wonderful celebration of learning, service and community.

On Friday, as part of our Feast Day celebrations, our students, staff and family volunteers took part in our annual Walk-A-Mile through Glenelg, supporting the important work of the Hutt St Centre.

Walk-A-Mile is a special opportunity for our students to think beyond themselves, develop empathy and understand how small actions can make a difference in the lives of others. Walking together through our local community brings our values of faith, respect, excellence, service and community to life in a very real way.

Thank you to the wonderful family volunteers who joined us and helped make the walk such a meaningful part of our Feast Day.

On Friday, we came together as a school community to celebrate the Feast Days of St Dominic and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

As a Dominican school, we give thanks for St Dominic's commitment to truth, learning and faith, while St Mary MacKillop's courage, compassion and dedication to education continue to inspire us all.

Throughout the week, our Principal, Mrs Sonja Smith and our School Ambassadors, Amelia, Oliver, Layla and William, proudly represented our school at Feast Day celebrations hosted by Cabra Dominican College and St Mary's College. They also had the opportunity to meet and chat with Dominican Sisters Sr Anne, Sr Patricia, Sr Johanna and Sr Maureen.

Wearing black and white, the colours of the Dominican Order, students and staff came together to reflect on the pillars of study, prayer, service and community that continue to guide our school community today.
