Thanks to our wonderful parent (and grandparent) helpers and children who came along to our working bee at kindy this morning. Our sandpit, mud kitchen and mud patch areas have been topped up and are all ready for the children to explore. It looks amazing!

It was book week last week and we had lots planned! The children all brought in their favourite book and staff sat with each child, and helped them "read" their book using the picture prompts. It is amazing how fluent the children can be with a familiar story, demonstrating their emerging book skills.
The staff read the CBA shortlisted early childhood books to the children and the Mulberry group voted for their favourite book "Where the lyrebird lives" using dots to represent their data.
And of course all the children loved our Special Person day where families read together with the children, supporting how important reading together is to promote literacy learning (eg. language acquisition, expanded vocabulary and general knowledge and more).
To prepare for our special visitors the children cooked up some yummy savoury scrolls, which assisted their measurement learning (using terms like 1/4 and 3/4) and were a huge hit!
The Gum Tree group were even lucky to have St Anthony's school visit and the school children read books to our kindy children
Lots of lovely literacy and numeracy learning opportunities - thanks so much to all our families for supporting this special day. Photos will shortly be in your child's learning folder, so please have a look. Below are a few snaps of the week...

Pamela Allen is one of our favourite authors at kindy. Last term we read one of her books called ‘The Potato People’ with the children. We had a go of making our own potato people and planted some potatoes in our garden- just like they did in the book.
We looked after the potatoes, giving them water when needed and watched how the plants got taller and taller. It was such a lovely surprise to come back after the holidays to see how much the plants had grown.
We only needed to wait a little while longer- for the tops of the plants to die off- then we knew that the potatoes were ready to harvest. It’s so exciting to be able to cook and eat vegetables that we have grown ourselves.
The mulberry group decided to roast their potatoes, using some of the rosemary from our garden as well- delicious.
The gumtree group made some potato fritters. The children enjoyed helping with the cooking- grating the vegetables, squeezing the juice out, breaking and mixing the eggs, then mixing everything together with some breadcrumbs, flour, and cheese. They smelled SO yummy as they cooked, and we enjoyed eating them with our lunch. We still have a few potatoes left so are going to complete the life cycle and plant them back in our garden to see if we can grow some more 😊

Celebrating Reconciliation Week 2023

In Term 2, the children have been learning about the indigenous culture of our country and the importance of the land to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We have also been learning that in Adelaide we live on Kaurna land. Each week, we sit in a circle and together we read our acknowledgment of country which focusses on the important of taking care the land, the sky, and the Kaurna people.
We have been learning about Aboriginal flag and how the red symbolises the land (the red colour of the soil) and ochre which has ceremonial significance, the black represents the aboriginal people, and the yellow circle represents the sun (which gives us life).
Some of the fun activities we have been doing for Reconciliation Week and throughout the term include:
- Learning how to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Kaurna language- Mukarta is your head, and Tidna means foot or toes.
- We have been singing the Ninna Marni Song.
- Together we looked at Aboriginal Dot Paintings and Art Symbols. We learnt about how symbols were used to create a story (because Aboriginal cultures did not have a written language). These artworks allowed Aboriginal people to pass on important cultural stories about the land and morals to the next generation.
- We made some rice rain shakers that we painted in a dot painting style.
- Some of the children made an Aboriginal flag using different coloured beans.
- And our placement teacher Zoe read the story ‘Animals around the Billabong’ to the children, and we learnt about native outback animals and looked at the Aboriginal artwork in the illustrations.
We’ve had a fun-filled week at Kindy learning about Aboriginal culture, we would love to know which activity your child enjoyed most this week?

Lots of enjoyment in the garden as the seasons change and we notice what is happening to the trees in our kindy space. This is also an opportunity for children to use their big muscles and work as a team to rake up the leaves :)

Thanks Todd and the team. It’s looking great especially with the rain we’ve recently had. Have you asked your child about the changes they have noticed at Kindy this week?

Lots of progress on the outdoor development. It's definitely starting to take shape. We are looking forward to seeing how the children interact in this new space next week.

The redevelopment of our outdoor learning environment has begun! The log area is being converted into a yarning circle with a fire pit in the centre - perfect for outdoor cooking and learning about the Aboriginal Kaurna people and how they lived and cared for the land. This will be complemented by bush tucker, insect and butterfly garden planting next week. The mud kitchen is getting an upgrade too so watch this space for further updates next week !
