Everyday Moments Turned into Micro-Math Lessons. 💡
You don't need worksheets or flashcards to practice math. The brain learns best when information is embedded in practical, high-interest activities:
🛒 Supermarket Shopping:
🔸The Math: Estimation, rounding, and decimals.
🔸How to use it: Have your child round prices to the nearest dollar and keep a running tally of the trolley total, or calculate which cereal box offers the best value per 100 grams.
🍪 Kitchen Baking:
🔸The Math: Fractions, volume, and ratios.
🔸How to use it: Ask them to double a recipe or figure out how many 1/4 cups are needed to make a full cup. Watching physical ingredients change size provides an instant visual anchor for fractions.
🚘 Road Trips & Commutes:
🔸The Math: Distance, time, and negative numbers.
🔸How to use it: Use the car dashboard to look at speed and distance. Ask questions like, "If we are traveling at 60 km/h, how far will we go in 30 minutes?" or look at the outdoor thermometer to discuss temperature changes.
🎲 Family Board Games:
🔸The Math: Probability, addition, and strategic logic.
🔸How to use it: Games like Monopoly, Uno, or Yahtzee force kids to calculate totals, handle play money, and calculate risks entirely through play.
Why real-world practice re-wires the learning brain:
🧠 Lowers Emotional Barriers: When math is framed as a game or a helpful household chore, the brain's stress center (the amygdala) remains calm, keeping the prefrontal cortex fully open to learning.
🧠 Builds "Dual Coding" Memory: Experiencing a math concept through touch, sight, and real-world utility creates multiple neural pathways to the same piece of information, making it easier to recall during school tests.
🧠 Answers the "Why": Children often disengage when learning feels pointless.
Showing them that math runs the world gives them an intrinsic motivation to master it.
How I supercharge this in tutoring:
While day-to-day activities are incredible for keeping math alive at home, my targeted one-on-one tutoring sessions take those real-world connections and map them directly onto the school curriculum. I capture your child's unique daily interests - whether it is sports, crafts, baking or something else special to them; and use them to conquer tough classroom topics. 💚

The Beginning… ✏️
Stepping back into study after 25 years didn't just change my career - it fundamentally changed how I view the human brain, and it is the exact reason I became a tutor. Experiencing the raw vulnerability, the initial self-doubt, and the ultimate triumph of learning as an adult re-taught me exactly what students go through every single day.
This journey gave me a unique, double-perspective on education:
I remember the exact weight of academic overwhelm. I know what it feels like when your working memory hits a bottleneck and you want to close the book.
I discovered the modern neuroscience of learning firsthand. I didn't just read about neuroplasticity, active recall, and spaced repetition in a textbook - I used them to rewire my own adult brain. 🧠
I learned that emotional safety always overrides cognition. I experienced the anxiety of modern assessments, proving to me that a student must feel safe and supported before they can ever process complex information.
My Journey: From Rusty Brain to Learning Strategist
What I used to think… And what I now know to be true
"I'm just too rusty to get this."
Neuroplasticity lasts a lifetime. Any brain can grow with the right strategy.
“Success requires endless rote copying.”
Active processing beats passive reading every single time.
“Mistakes mean a lack of ability.”
Mistakes are just essential data points required to build a neural pathway. 💚
What This Means for My Students:
I don't just teach math, science, or study skills from a clinical curriculum. I teach from a place of deep, lived empathy. When a primary student struggles with an assignment, hits a homework wall, or battles self-doubt, I look at them and see the exact hurdles I had to jump over myself.
I became a tutor to pass on the ultimate shortcut: the exact brain-based, stress-reducing study habits that saved my own academic journey. Because if a 25-year break taught me anything, it's that no mind is ever "broken" — it just needs the right toolkit and someone who truly believes in its potential. ✨

⭐️ 1 in 7 children experience a mental health issue ☹️
Mental health impacts all areas of a childs life; friendships, schooling, problem solving, emotional regulation and future relationships.
Parents are predominantly the first to witness a change in their childs mental wellbeing and if these changes are not addressed, the child can go on to experience serious mental health issues.
Early intervention is critical 🎀
Engaging with a therapist can help children and their caregiver to understand what it is they are feeling and be provided with solution focused support 💛
There is often a stigma attached to reaching out for help when it comes to our own or our childrens mental health challenges; some people may feel that their parenting will be judged but I am here to let you know that, at Flourishing Through Therapy, it is a judgement free zone ❤️ I am here to help you and your child thrive and flourish.
Asking for help and seeking guidance breaks down the stigma and opens up a world of opportunities for healing and empowerment, giving you and your child the tools to help yourselves 🫶
Reach out. Now is the time 🌺🌟💜

Tomorrow is Kids Helpline Day!
We're here for children and young people 24/7, which is why we chose the 24th day of the 7th month as Kids Helpline Day.
But the reality is, young people can't seek support they don't know exists.
It's why this year, we're asking everyone to do one simple thing: tell a young person Kids Helpline is here for them.
We know that getting support early can make all the difference. The sooner a young person knows where to turn, the sooner they can reach out before a challenge becomes a crisis.
A simple conversation today could be the reason they seek help tomorrow.
This Kids Helpline Day, help us reach them. Help make sure every young person knows there's somewhere safe to turn, whenever they need it.
