Really looking forward to this event. Don’t tell your friends though … it’s just over an hours drive from Adelaide and I’m trying to keep the gorgeous little town of Price all to myself!!

Happy International day of Biodiversity! Most of my very hungry Entometa caterpillars have spun their cocoons and the adult moths are starting to hatch. This female and male are the first ones out. They will mate tonight (you can see the male is already getting quite excited by the close proximity of the female above him). He will die within a day or two of mating while the female will begin laying eggs and die in a week or so.

Stumbled across this gorgeous rain moth man (Abantiades sp) at the front doors of my local library. He flew off eventually, straight back into the bright window lights of the nearby buildings, thereby denying himself the chance to find a lovely moth lady with whom to reproduce. I wish we could have a ‘dark hour’ every night in every suburb where all the lights are turned off to give insects time to reorientate themselves to the moon. 💔

Do you want to learn more about mushrooms in and around Adelaide? I can highly recommend my wonderful friend Kate, The Wild Food Huntress. You need to get in quick though because this is the first one she’s been able to do in a while so imagine it will be super popular.
Set your alarms for 6:30pm tomorrow night (CST). We will have our tickets ready for purchase on our website.

This could be an interesting insight into the hard truth about conservation and invertebrate species extinction in this country. For all we talk about the importance of moths and butterflies to biodiversity; when it comes down to a GP motocross track or a golf course to titillate the sensibilities of the would be rich and influential among us… we know the lepidopteran won’t win. Am I alone in thinking it’s time to change the way we make decisions around endangered invertebrates.

When I retire and I finally have time to produce a nature inspired paint range for Dulux ‘Dogs vomit slime mold yellow’ will definitely be a colour.
