Messy play… it’s more than just a mess.

At Torrensville Childcare Centre, we see every day how sensory play helps children make sense of their world.

Whether it’s splashing in water, squishing playdough, or exploring different textures with their hands, children are learning through doing. They’re building coordination, exploring cause and effect and beginning to understand how their bodies and the world around them work.

At home, this can look like a bowl of water, some kitchen utensils or time spent outside with sand, leaves or grass. Simple, everyday moments shared together can hold so much meaning.

At TCC, we create space for this kind of learning every day, where children feel safe, supported and free to explore in their own way.

Play is how babies begin to make sense of the world and it is something we gently nurture every day at Torrensville Childcare Centre (TCC).

When you roll a ball, stack blocks or make a silly face, your baby is doing so much more than just playing. They are learning how things work, exploring movement and beginning to understand cause and effect, all while feeling safe and connected to you.

We often see how these small, playful moments help build strong foundations by supporting confidence, curiosity and a sense of trust in the world around them.

At TCC, play is not just an activity, it is how learning naturally unfolds. Through warm, responsive relationships, we create spaces where children feel secure to explore, try new things and grow in their own time.

Building Baby Brains Through Everyday Words
At Torrensville Community Childcare Centre, we know that babies start learning to talk long before their first words. It all begins with connection.

From the Baby Room to home routines, children learn how language works by watching, listening and feeling heard.

👂 When your baby makes a sound, a gesture or a face, pause... and respond. That little moment of back-and-forth is actually the foundation of communication!
🍼 Try talking your baby through everyday activities, “Now I’m warming your bottle,” or “We’re putting on your shoes to go outside!”

These simple, warm interactions at home or in care, help babies build trust, connection and the wiring for words.

Together with families, we create environments where words grow minds.

Tiny Explorers in Our Garden Spaces
🌿 This week, our toddlers have been all about the garden! From discovering bugs 🐛 to watering plants, they’ve explored with joy, care and curiosity.

Outdoor play is more than just fun, it helps children:
🧠 Build sensory awareness
💪 Strengthen coordination and gross motor skills
🌻 Connect to nature and rhythms of the world

At TCC, we believe nature belongs in children’s everyday experiences and that children deserve the time and space to explore at their own pace.

Here’s to muddy hands, curious hearts and learning in motion!

🧧🎉 Happy Chinese New Year to our families and community celebrating tomorrow!
We are learning about Lunar New Year through storytelling, sensory play with red and gold textures and decorating the room with lanterns they'll make themselves.

These cultural moments offer so much more than celebration:
🌏 They remind children that identity is valued
💬 They spark questions, stories and sharing
🤝 They build a sense of community and true belonging

To every family observing this beautiful celebration, we honour your traditions and welcome your stories.
What’s a special Lunar New Year tradition you share with your little ones?

Reopening Notice

We are pleased to confirm that the Torrensville Childcare Centre will reopen at 7:00am Monday 16 February 2026 following the recent temporary closure.

During this time, in line with SA Health guidelines the centre has undergone a comprehensive deep clean with a second to occur on Sunday the 15th of February, along with our standard infection control procedures, to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for children and staff.

We sincerely thank our families for your patience and support, and we apologise again for the disruption caused. The health and wellbeing of our community remains our highest priority.

As gastro illness is still circulating in the community, we kindly remind families not to return any child who is experiencing symptoms. Children must be symptom-free for 48 hours before returning.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back.

Torrensville Childcare Centre will be temporarily closed from 6:00pm today (Wednesday 11 February 2025) and will reopen at 7:00am Monday 16 February 2025 due to a significant gastro outbreak within our centre.

This decision has been made to prioritise the health and safety of our children, families and staff, and to allow for a comprehensive deep clean to prevent further spread of illness.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and support. Families will not be charged for the days the centre is closed.

To those whose children attend the centre please refer to your email for full details or contact the centre directly on (08) 8408 9700 if you have any questions.

Why Relationships Come First at TCC
At Torrensville Childcare Centre, learning begins with relationships. Our educators take the time to know each child — their cues, their interests, their story.

Strong relationships build emotional safety, and emotional safety allows children to learn, take risks, and express themselves fully.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:
💬 Slowing down during transitions
🫶 A quiet hand on the shoulder when needed
🌱 Consistent routines that feel predictable and comforting

Our centre isn’t just a place for play, it’s a place where children feel deeply known and valued.

💬 Parents: What’s one moment when you saw your child feeling safe at TCC? We’d love to hear.

January 26th means different things to different people. For some families, it is a day of gathering and celebration. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, it marks the beginning of colonisation, dispossession and ongoing trauma, while also holding the truth of survival, strength and an enduring connection to Country.

At Torrensville Childcare Centre, we care for children within the context of their families, cultures and stories. We know that children learn not only through what we teach, but through what we model. Racism and injustice are not just part of history, they continue to shape the lived experiences of families and communities today.

We believe in creating a learning environment where respect, curiosity and kindness are nurtured from an early age. We acknowledge the complexity of this day and commit to listening, reflecting and walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, today and every day.

How do babies learn to talk?
By watching, listening and feeling safe with the people around them.

At Torrensville Childcare Centre, we see every day how powerful simple, everyday conversations can be. When babies babble, gesture or make eye contact, we take the time to listen, respond and allow space for back-and-forth communication, because those moments matter.

Talking through routines like nappy changes, mealtimes and getting ready to go outside helps babies connect words with meaning and builds a strong foundation for language.

Every child develops at their own pace and “normal” looks different for every family. Our role is to walk alongside each child, creating a calm, responsive environment where their voice is heard and valued from the very beginning.

Those small, shared moments help build confidence, connection and belonging.
