The Mathematical Association of South Australia is delighted to congratulate Adelaide-born mathematician Terence “Terry” Tao on being appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in the recent King’s Birthday Honours. This is order was awarded in recognition of his immense, world-leading contribution to international mathematics.

Before becoming a researcher at UCLA in Los Angeles and winning the prestigious Fields Medal, Terry was a student right here in South Australia, attending Blackwood High School and Flinders University. In reflecting on this latest honour, he kindly credited the fantastic teachers and mentors he had at all of his schools in Adelaide before moving to the United States.

It is a wonderful reminder of the impact that dedicated South Australian educators have on shaping the minds of tomorrow, and we are proud to see his achievements recognised on the world stage.
