The Women in Economics Network (WEN) and the Young Economists Network (YEN) are both sub-networks of the Economics Society of Australia, the peak body representing Australian economists.
Each year, WEN runs a mentoring program. This program pairs aspiring women economists with experienced women economists, to provide mentoring and guidance as you navigate your economics studies and the workforce. The application of economic theory and techniques differs greatly between Economist roles. The Young Economists QLD aim to provide a greater understanding into how economics is applied in practice within the public and private sector, as part of a two-part webinar series.
The second webinar in the series will cover Applied Economics in the Private Sector, where we will have Economists from Accenture, AEC Group and Blueprint Institute present case studies on how they have used economics in practice.
When: 5:00pm – 6:30pm, Wednesday 29th September 2021. Question time will follow the presentations.

Young Economists Network Debate
Following on from the ESA webinar 'Housing Affordability- Is the Great Australian Dream Out of Reach for Today's Young', the 2021 National Online Young Economist Network (YEN) Debate is scheduled to take place from 6pm AEST on Thursday, September 16th with the Debate topic focusing on the key question of:
'Given the better than expected economic recovery within the Australia housing sector in recent months, should the Federal Government look to implement measures (including those of a policy, regulatory, etc. nature) to lower the volume of new investment housing loans/credit to help improve housing affordability and assist in the achievement of more equitable housing and overall economic outcomes?'
So please join us for this free online event where 2020 Young Economist of the Year Professor Markus Brueckner and Qld YEN President Grace Houlihan will lead opposing Teams of young economist debate speakers from across Australia who will present their respective arguments on this pertinent issue facing many young people nationally.
The Debate will be moderated by Professor Michael McLure and there will be a quick online poll conducted at the end of the Debate to help determine the winning Debate Team.

Water Economics, Corruption and the MDB | Prof Sarah Wheeler
Professor Sarah Wheeler will discuss water distribution in the Murray Darling Basin and how the economic and political interests intersect with what should be first and foremost an environmental concern.
Sarah Wheeler is a Professor of Water Economics at the University of Adelaide and is the immediate past President for the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES).

Lachlan is an economist and unionist. He has worked in the fields of industry policy, electricity markets and microeconomic reform.
He is President of the Young Economists network at the Economics Society of Australia ACT and convener of the ACT Fabian Society. He holds a BA and Master of International Relations and is currently studying a Master of International and Development Economics at the Australian National University.
