LEARNING JAPANESE ISN’T JUST FOR THE GROWN-UPS!

Know a young person who loves Japan, is fascinated by Japanese culture, or would love to learn the language?

Japanese for Fun and Travel is one of the WEA courses now open to younger learners! 🎉

👧 Students aged 12–13 can enrol when accompanied by an adult who is also enrolled in the course.

🙋 Students aged 14–18 can enrol and attend on their own.

So this could be a fantastic opportunity for a young person to start learning Japanese independently, or something for a parent, grandparent or other adult to learn alongside them.

This friendly introductory course is all about practical Japanese. Students will learn greetings and everyday phrases, how to order food and drinks, go shopping, ask questions, use language for hotels and transport, and begin reading and writing Japanese.

There are conversations, role plays, exercises and games along the way, plus plenty of fascinating insights into Japanese culture, etiquette and traditions. 🇯🇵

The course is taught by Emiko Kobashi, who was born and raised in Japan and has extensive experience teaching Japanese to learners of all ages.

And adults are still very welcome too!

📅 Thursdays from 15 October, 10:00am–12:00pm

🎉 WEA ISN'T JUST FOR GROWN-UPS ANYMORE!

If the new WEA Course Guide has just landed in your letterbox, you might notice something NEW as you start browsing... 👀

For the first time in many years, selected WEA courses are now open to students under 18!

For more than 110 years, WEA has been a place where South Australians can follow their curiosity, discover new interests and learn simply because they want to. Now we're delighted to extend that opportunity to younger learners too.

Perhaps there’s a budding artist in your family who’d love to try portrait drawing, photography, watercolour, illustration or Pop Art. A future traveller keen to learn French or Japanese. A young strategist ready to try their hand at chess, or someone who’d love to learn more about social media. They could even get creative in the kitchen and build their own 3D gingerbread house!

It's also a great opportunity for parents, grandparents and other family members to enrol and enjoy learning something new together. 💙

Look for the U18 symbol throughout the new Course Guide, then check the individual course description on the website for the applicable age and attendance requirements.

👉 Explore the new course guide here: https://online.flippingbook.com/view/644821235/

So, when you're deciding what YOU might like to learn next, pass the guide around the family too.

Because curiosity doesn't have an age limit. 💙

🎶 Small instrument. Big fun!

There’s a reason the ukulele has become such a popular instrument around the world. It’s portable, approachable for complete beginners and, perhaps best of all, incredibly social.

Learning in a group makes it even more enjoyable. You can practise chords and strumming together, play familiar songs, learn from each other and have a few laughs along the way. There’s no pressure to be perfect, just plenty of encouragement as everyone develops their skills.

At WEA, we have ukulele courses for different stages of your musical journey:

🎵 Ukulele Basics – Level 1
Never picked up a ukulele before? Start here! Over four weeks, you’ll learn five of the most useful chords and three beginner-friendly strumming patterns. It’s a great way to give the ukulele a try.

🎵 Ukulele Basics – Level 2
Ready for a few more chords? Build on the skills from Level 1 while exploring new chords and strumming styles including island/calypso and reggae.

🎵 Ukulele: Chord Twins and More
For those with some experience, this course takes things further with more chords, common strumming patterns, tuning, reading song sheets and chord diagrams, all while playing plenty of songs together.

Your tutor is Dr Chris Waite, an experienced musician and trained ukulele teacher who is also the musical director of UkestraSA, a community ukulele orchestra.

Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a musical challenge or simply a fun way to spend time with other people, perhaps it’s time to discover why the ukulele has so many fans. 🎶🌺

Search “ukulele” on the WEA website to find your next course.

🏛️ A rare opportunity to step inside one of South Australia's historic treasures...

Dating back to 1840, Anlaby is one of South Australia's most significant historic estates and was once home to the wealthy Dutton pastoral family.

Now the property is up for sale, and what happens next is unknown. Public access may not continue under future ownership, making this WEA day tour a particularly special opportunity to experience Anlaby while you still can.

And there are just TWO dates available for this unique tour:

📅 Sunday 20 September
📅 Sunday 8 November

Join Dr Denis Binnion AM for a fascinating day exploring the history of the region before arriving at Anlaby, where you'll enjoy lunch in the historic stables followed by a tour inside the homestead with the current owners.

Along the way, you'll also:

⛪ Explore the early German Lutheran settlements of Freeling and picturesque Nain
🏘️ Discover historic Daveyston and its connections with Nain
📚 Learn about the region with extensive history notes prepared by Denis
🌿 Enjoy some free time in Kapunda on the return journey

With more than 40 years spent developing and leading historical tours throughout South Australia and around the world, former WEA CEO Denis Binnion brings an extraordinary depth of knowledge to the day.

Our Anlaby Lunch and House Tour offers something that may not be possible for much longer: the chance to step inside this remarkable property and experience an important piece of South Australian history before it changes hands.

🚌 Depart WEA Centre at 9:00am sharp
🏠 House tour and lunch included
🕠 Return approximately 5:35pm

If Anlaby has always been on your list of places to visit, this could be the time to do it.
