Spare Seat

Spare Seat This is a fresh approach to the school experience. For the young people who no longer see the point. This is adventure. This is Spare Seat.

And for the educators too slammed to reimagine it alone. This is learning. www.spareseat.net/school-programs

(Sound on for this one)

ABSOLUTE HYPE CROWD!!

Setting up before a group session today and I was having a shoot around and playing around with camera before they arrived.

A local primary school were walking by and all of a sudden they were pumping up my tyres in a big way.

Sharing all the feels with someone they’ve never met. Celebration ➡️ slight disappointment (and a quick recovery into…) ➡️ encouragement ➡️ more celebration

Little legends just keepin it real.

Southport is such a beautiful spot. It’s just under an hour from the city and it’s absolute magic. The Friday crew had a great day here exploring, getting their feet (and pants) wet and trying to keep the soccer ball out of the water! We had some cool chats about the tides, different rocks, the Onkaparinga River and whether we went to the park or got hot chips on the way back.

Hot chips for the win. And a perfect way to end the school week 👏

⚽️ 👣 Wet feet and plenty of steps in today’s short session.

This groups program is a little different to the usual Spare Seat format. It’s a short block on Wednesday mornings. The focus is on physical movement, respectful participation, and just having a crack.

To stay on the right path and allow everyone to have a good time, these guys even rocked up with their own set of group norms and a consequence (that they chose and agreed on).

Rather than just being told what to, they’re taking ownership and driving the experience, which is really cool.

Really looking forward to see what these young ones achieve this term 💪🏽

A lot of Spare Seat probably looks pretty relaxed from the outside. Walking, swimming, cooking, hanging out and exploring.

And honestly, it is.

But there’s also real intention behind it.

Over the years I’ve learnt more and more that humans generally do well when our bodies and minds are strong, and we're exposed to the good stuff. Movement. Sunlight. Time outdoors. Nutritious food. Social connections. Challenge. Adventure. Time away from screens.

The tricky part is that a lot of young people don’t just magically discover these things on their own.

If you rarely go to the beach, how do you learn to enjoy the beach?
If movement has mostly felt like competitive sport or PE lessons where you feel out of place, how do you learn it can actually feel good?

Spare Seat isn’t about telling young people how to live.

It’s more about creating environments and experiences that help people feel healthier, calmer, more connected and more like themselves.

Great day out with this crew.

It was a cruisy one along the Torrens today.

We walked, cooked lunch, counted planes overhead, and spent some time connecting and thinking about the term ahead.

A really nice mix of welcoming some young people into their first Spare Seat program, while reconnecting with a few familiar faces too.

Today’s numbers:

6 young people 🧍🏽‍♀️
12 burgers cooked 🍔
9,652 steps 👣
27 planes counted ✈️

“I’m feeling more confident and settled, and enjoying knowing more people.”

Sometimes it’s that simple.

Side by side, no pressure. Just time, space, and the right kind of support for things to shift.

That’s the work.

Small groups. Real connection. A different way in for young people who don’t always feel like they fit the usual mould.
