Recently our SAASTA School Operations Coordinator had the privilege of welcoming prospective Aboriginal students to our Riverland Academy at their SAASTA Come and Try Day.
Students were immersed in a day of learning, culture and connection, experiencing firsthand what it means to be part of the Academy. Our current students proudly performed a cultural dance they learned at Power Cup, shared traditional games, and using native ingredients from their newly established native garden, cooked damper together.
Events like these are a powerful way to celebrate culture, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of Academy students. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING OR WORKING IN NOW:
SANFL Indigenous Engagement and Participation Lead
HOW DID SAASTA PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL:
Got me out of my comfort zone, experiencing what it’s like to live and study in the city (Tafe Blocks). SAASTA Cert 3 in Sport & Rec allowed me to go straight into a Cert 4 in Sport Development during my Traineeship with the SANFL in 2022.
FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME IN SAASTA:
Visiting Nepabunna Flinders Ranges, making new friends at Tafe Block, and Winning Power Cup on Adelaide Oval in 2019.
HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY AND CULTURE:
I always make time to reconnect with the places and people I grew up with. I’m also working in a First Nations aligned role, so celebrating culture and staying connected to community is at the heart of my job, and I’m very lucky that it is through a sport that I play and love.
ADVICE FOR FUTURE SAASTA STUDENTS:
Put yourself out there, try different things, and try your best. Experience means a lot in this world. If you’re willing to lend a hand where others may not, try things that others might avoid, and give 100% every time…People will notice, and there will be reward for effort. I tried University in 2021 but it wasn’t my thing. The traineeship with SANFL popped up in 2022, my friends were worried that it didn’t pay well and after the 18 months then it would be back to square one. I thought I’d just try and give it a good crack. 4 years later and I have a Full-Time, permanent contract with the SANFL.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY STUDYING OR WORKING IN NOW?
I’m a certified Ngarrindjeri Language Trainer and run a business ‘Panggalaki’ where I teach Ngarrindjeri Language and Weaving.
HOW DID SAASTA PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL?
SAASTA supported me to complete my SACE in 2013 and allowed me to push myself in culturally safe spaces surrounded by Mob, this is where I always felt safest to do so. I believe SAASTA was the start of my journey to develop public speaking skills and to always use our voices as Aboriginal people, never to allow others to tell our story for us.
FAVORITE MEMORY FROM SAASTA?
Aunty Donna Kartinyeri organised for our school to stay at the West Beach Parks for the SAASTA Power Cup. As a result we formed strong bonds and were able to travel to the football grounds as a team each day. I remember staying in the same area of the park with the Ceduna Team and we were all so happy to hang out, have a laugh and build long lasting connections with each other. Had it not been for SAASTA, the Power Cup and tireless work from Aunty Donna, we would not have had so many opportunities to build connections with Mob from across the state and build strong identities, community and a real sense of belonging.
HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY AND CULTURE?
Being married to a strong Kaurna/Ngarrindjeri man, Isaac Hannam, and welcoming our daughter Iris in 2024 has strengthened our commitment to staying connected to our people, language and Country. We regularly spend time with family so Iris can grow up surrounded by her siblings, grandparents and extended family, and we make it a priority to return to Marrunggun, Raukkan and the river. Time on Country, around the fire and under the stars, reminds us of the healing and strength these connections bring. We stay connected every day through family, weaving, speaking Ngarrindjeri language and spending time on Country.
ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS?
Seize any opportunity that comes your way, don’t be shame, just say yes and find a way to make it happen!

What an incredible start to Aboriginal Pathways to Success Week 2026!

Workabout was proud to collaborate with Adelaide University for Monday, dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation.

We were honoured to welcome First Nations' Ambassador Adam Goodes as our guest speaker, who joined Callan and Tashani for a powerful yarn that inspired students to believe in themselves, embrace new opportunities, and back their potential.

Another highlight was hearing from past Workabout students Jonah and Keira, who shared their journeys since Year 10, offering valuable insights and showing what's possible through determination, growth and opportunity.

Students also enjoyed a fantastic showcase from CASM, featuring a live performance and highlighting the exciting Music Pathways at Adelaide University.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success!

The week we’ve been looking forward to is finally here! We’re excited to kick off Aboriginal Pathways to Success Week in collaboration with Adelaide University.

This week is all about exploring opportunities, building confidence, creating connections, and discovering what the future can hold.

From hands-on activities to campus experiences, it’s time to learn, laugh, and maybe even step outside your comfort zone. To all our students: welcome! Bring your curiosity, your questions, and your best effort.

Let’s make this a week full of new experiences, great memories, and plenty of success.

NAME: Adam Rigney

YEARS IN SAASTA: 2009 - 2011

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY STUDYING OR WORKING IN:
Remedial massage therapist, 10 years in
HOW DID SAASTA PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL:
SAASTA showed me there were other things outside of school that could occupy my time, things like sports and community work.
FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME IN SAASTA:
Can’t narrow it down to just one, i was happy playing sports and learning new things with people who were just like me.
HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY AND CULTURE: Unfortunately, I’m not directly involved with a lot of cultural practices as often as I
would like to be, I do a bit of art in my spare time which helps connect me and I am involved with a football team that embraces and celebrates culture which is fantastic to be a part of, I have designed boots for myself to wear during football games.
ADVICE FOR FUTURE SAASTA STUDENTS:
Have fun! enjoy your moments with other students/mob from around the state that you might not have got a chance to meet before. work hard, learn what you can, but enjoy it too!

We’re very proud to see SAASTA Specialist Creative Arts Academy students, Shania Wombat, Maya Baker, and Jack Tur Martens, exhibit their work at the Adelaide Festival Centre as part of ‘Our Mob’ and ‘defi-Nations’. Each of the students explored powerful and complex concepts, through various mediums and installations, including and honouring first languages in each of their works. The exhibition will be on display in the Galleries, Festival Theatre foyer, until the 4th of October.
